BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team was swept by the Bemidji State University volleyball team on Friday night, 25-14, 25-23, and 25-23.
Leading the way for the Dragons was junior
Kaitlin VanWinkle with 10 blocks and five total blocks. Senior
Sam Sullivan had 14 assists while junior
Abby Wolpern had 12 digs. Courtney Volkmann had 30 assists and six kills to lead the Beavers.
Bemidji State scored the first two points of the first set and increased its lead to 10-5 after an error from MSUM. A kill from Jesscia Yost increased the Beavers lead once again to 16-8. Bemidji State took the set 25-14 after a kill from Kelsi Crawford.
The second set was tightly contested early on, with both teams trading points back and forth. Five ties occurred before Bemidji State scored three straight to lead 11-8. The Beavers maintained its three-point lead through for a majority of the set until the Dragons came back and tied the score at 23 after a Beaver attack error. After a timeout from BSU, a kill by Amanda Tronick and Volkmann gave the set to the Beavers, 25-23 heading into the break.
Again, the third set was close before the Dragons gained a 11-9 lead on a kill from VanWinkle. The Beavers fought back and tied the score at 19 after a service ace. Another service ace gave the Beavers a 24-21 lead. The Dragons scored two points off two BSU attack errors to cut the lead to one point, but a Tronick kill finished off the set 25-23 and the match 3-0 for Bemidji State.
MSUM will take the court again Saturday afternoon when it faces Minnesota Crookston in Crookston, Minn. at 4 p.m.
