WAYNE, Neb. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team traveled to Wayne, Neb. to face the No. 13 Wayne State College Wildcats on Saturday afternoon. Wayne State defeated MSUM in four sets, 25-14, 24-25, 25-21, and 25-17.

The Dragons are now 7-9 on the season and 2-6 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate College play. Wayne State improves to 14-2 on the year and 7-1 in NSIC play.

Wayne State utilized a very balanced attack in the match; three players had 11 kills and one had 10. Katie Hughes, Elizabeth Gebhardt, Alex Opperman had 11 while Leisa McClintock had 10. For the Dragons, junior Abby Wopern led all players with 14 kills. Senior
Sam Sullivan led the team in assists with 21 and added 11 digs. Junior
Casie Baer led the team in digs with 13 and had 20 assists. Junior
Kaitlin VanWinkle led the team with five total blocks.

Wayne State College scored the first four points of the first set and used a stretch of six straight points to open a 14-4 lead. Opperman had two straight kills on sets from McClintock in the stretch. The Dragons pushed the lead down to 21-13 at one point, but dropped the set 25-14.

The Dragons trailed 11-6 in the second set when
Sydney Foss went back to serve for MSUM. One service error, two kills from Wolpern, and two attack errors from Wayne State tied the score at 11. The set was back-and-forth after that point, with neither team scoring more than two consecutive points until a kill from senior
Maggie Gruber and two kills from VanWinkle gave the Dragons the set 25-23.

The third set was tied at 7-7 when the Wildcats scored four straight points to open an 11-7 lead. WSC led 18-10 before the Dragons rattled off six consecutive points to close the lead to two points. Gruber had two kills in the run. WSC held off the Dragons however and finished off the set 25-21 after an attack error by MSUM.

Wayne State jumped out to an early lead again in the fourth set, taking a 12-4 lead after a kill from McClintock. The Wildcats took the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.

MSUM will return home to Nemzek Fieldhouse this week to face No. 9 Southwest Minnesota State on Friday night and Sioux Falls on Saturday night.
