Dragons Close Season with 3-0 Sweep of MSU

MOORHEAD, Minn. --The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team celebrated parent's night on Saturday afternoon in Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse. The parents of the Dragon student athletes were sure given a treat as MSUM played arguably its best match of the season and defeated the Minnesota State Mankato volleyball team in three straight sets, 25-17, 25-17, and 25-15.

The Dragons played an all-out impressive match, spiking 43 kills, compiling 62 digs, and eight service aces. Junior Abby Wolpern hit an outstanding .526 in 19 attack attempts and led the Dragons with 11 kills. Junior Casie Baer added 20 assists in the match. Junior Amber Krenske led the team with 16 digs while sophomore Kelsey Hartkopf and Wolpern each had three total blocks. In their final games as Dragons; senior Sam Sullivan had 13 assists, five service aces, and seven digs, senior Maggie Gruber had seven kills and four digs, and junior Morgan Gradishar had eight kills.

The first set was a back-and-forth battle, with the first significant lead coming at 15-11 in favor of MSUM after back-to-back attack errors from the Mavericks. Sullivan served two consecutive aces to increase the Dragons lead to six points at 19-13. Junior Kaitlin VanWinkle had the final kill of the set from a Baer set to give MSUM set one 25-17.

The Dragons were down 14-13 in the second set when MSUM went on a run of seven straight points to take a lead at 20-14. In the run, Sullivan had two service aces and Gruber and Wolpern each added two kills of their own.  VanWinkle again put away the last point of the set at 25-17 with a kill from another Baer set and the Dragons went into the break ahead two sets to zero.

MSUM led at 7-6 in the third set when the Dragons rattled off another impressive run, scoring nine straight points to open a 16-6 lead. Gruber and Gradishar each contributed a kill in the stretch. MSUM utilized another stretch of five consecutive points to lead 21-9 and put away the match 25-15 on yet again another kill from VanWinkle.

Saturday afternoon was the final match of the season for the 2014 season. The Dragons finished with a record of 11-17 and 6-14 in the NSIC.
