Dragon Women to Face Minot State and Mary to Open NSIC Home Season

The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team hosts its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games of the season starting on Friday against Minot State (6 p.m. tipoff). The Dragons conclude the weekend against Mary at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The Dragons will meet Minot State for a 20th time and hold a 14-5 series lead, although the Beavers have won the last two meetings which were held in 2013-14. MSUM will meet Mary for a 34th time and holds a 21-12 lead in the series. Mary won both meetings in 2013-14.

The Dragons are 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the NSIC. MSUM's NSIC opener was spoiled on Saturday as No. 12-ranked Northern State beat the Dragons, 74-42 in Aberdeen, S.D.  Junior guard Meghan Roehrich led MSUM with 13 points., with 11 coming in the second half.

Roehrich leads the Dragons at 18.0 points per game, while junior forward Savanna Handevidt averages 9.2 points per game. Junior forward Heather Strese averages 7.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game for MSUM. Junior guard Jessica Hart has nine assists while sophomore guard Morgan Banasik has eight steals through five games.

MSUM is scoring 57 points per game and shooting 33.5 percent from the field. The Dragons are outrebounding their foes 38.2-37.8. MSUM is allowing 64.6 points per game on defense and teams are shooting 40.4 percent from the field against the Dragons.

Karla Nelson is in her 15th season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 241-163 at the school.

About Minot State
Minot State (5-1, 0-1 NSIC) saw a five-game winning streak end with a 57-56 loss at Mary on Nov. 29. Morgan Klose led Minot State with 12 points in the losing effort.

Alex Haley leads the Beavers at 12.5 points per game while Katie Hardy averages 11.8 and Diondra Denton averages 11.0. Hardy leads at 5.5 rebounds per game while Haley averages 4.0 assists per game. Klose averages 2.0 steals per game.

Minot State averages 71.5 points per game and shoots 44.8 percent from the field. The Beavers allow 60.5 points per game and teams are shooting 37.6 percent against them this season.

Sheila Green Gerding is in her 20th season as Minot State's head coach with a record of 329-223.

About Mary
Mary, which faces Northern State prior to facing MSUM,  is 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC. The Marauders earned a 57-56 win over Minot State on Nov. 29 in Bismarck, N.D.  Brittney Dietz led the Marauders with 17 points.

Dietz is averaging 22.0 points per game for the Marauders while Sloan Turner averages 8.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Hannah Larson averages 6.4 rebounds per game while Haley Hibbs averages 3.3 assists per game.

Mary averages 76.3 points per game and is shooting 40.7 percent from the field. The Marauders outrebound their foes 43.1-39.3.
Mary, which faced Northern on Friday, allows 65.3 points per game and teams are shooting 39.2 percent against the Marauders this season.

Rick Neumann is in his third season as Mary's head coach with a record of 39-25 at the school.

Roehrich Sets Career-High
Junior forward Meghan Roehrich scored a career-high 32 points in the Dragons' 78-67 win over San Francisco State last Thursday. The Fargo, N.D., native's 32-point total as the most scored in a game by a Dragon player since Jan. 16, 2010 when Alison Nash-Gerlach scored 32 in a win over Minnesota Crookston. Roehrich leads MSUM at 18.0 points per game so far in 2014-15.

Strese Cleans the Glass
With the loss of her older sister, Megan, who was the team's leading rebounder a year ago, junior Heather Strese has stepped in to fill that rebounding void. She leads MSUM at 7.8 rebounds per game, a mark that is second in the NSIC, and tied a career-high with 12 boards in the win over San Francisco State last week.
