MSUM Men Lose Tough 92-88 Contest at Vikings

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team had four players in double figures, but came up just short at Augustana on Friday night, dropping a 92-88 decision to the Vikings in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action in Sioux Falls, S.D.

MSUM fell to 16-7 overall and 12-7 in the NSIC with the loss, while Augustana improved to 14-11 overall and 11-8 in the league. MSUM's last seven games – two of which have gone to overtime – have been decided by a combined 26 points. The Dragons remain in a tie for second in the NSIC North Division and hold the seeding tiebreaker over St. Cloud State. The top four teams in each division host a home game in the first round of the NSIC tournament on Feb. 26.

Sophomore Tyler Vaughan led the Dragon offense with 21 points, while junior forward Urbane Bingham added 12 points. Junior guard Prescott Williams and freshman Aaron Lien had 10 points each for the Dragons. Senior guard Tarell Clark added nine points, a team-high nine rebounds and a game-high five assists.

MSUM shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the field, compared to 49.2 percent (30-of-61) for the Vikings. Augustana had a 39-34 edge in rebounds.

The Dragons were down 10 at 61-51 with 12:02 left in the game but went on a 15-3 run over the next four minutes to take a 66-64 lead. Williams keyed the spurt with five points while sophomore guard Ngijol Songolo added four.

MSUM led 72-69 after a free throw by Taylor Filipek with 6:10 left. The Vikings, however, went on a 14-4 run to take an 83-76 lead with 3:42 left.
Junior guard Malik Wood buried a three-pointer with 1:42 left to bring MSUM within 84-83, but on the ensuing possession, Augustana's Adam Beyer drained a three to put the Vikings back up four.

Vaughan hit a three to make it 88-86 with 50 seconds left. The Dragons had a chance to tie but missed both free throws; and with 14 seconds left, Augie's Ben Shellim hit two foul shots to make it 90-86.

Once again Vaughan scored to bring MSUM within two, but the Vikings iced the game with four seconds left with two free throws to make it 92-88, which was the final.

The Dragons led 19-13 with 12:24 left in the first half. Clark and Vaughan led the way during the opening eight minutes with five points each while Bingham had four.

The Vikings turned the tables later in the half, however, and took a 41-31 lead with 2:18 left. The Dragons outscored Augustana 9-2 to close the half to climb back within 43-40.  Sophomore Isaac Sevlie converted a three-point play during that run while Vaughan buried a three.

MSUM shot 50 percent (14-of-28) in the first half, compared to 48.4 percent (15-of-31) for Augustana. Bingham led MSUM with nine points with Vaughan and Sevlie had eight apiece. Clark had seven.

The second half saw the game stay close until Augustana took a 10-point lead before MSUM rallied to regain the lead.

Wood and Sevlie had eight points each for MSUM. Wood had three assists.

The Dragons wrap up the weekend road trip Saturday at Wayne State. Game time is 6 p.m. at Rice Auditorium in Wayne, Neb.

Steve d'Eustachio Stat of Game: Before tonight's loss, the Dragons had won seven consecutive games when they made at least 10 three-pointers in a game. Their last loss while nailing at least 10 triples before tonight was in their 76-75 overtime loss at Bemidji St. on Jan. 25, 2013.
