MSUM Women Host Beavers and Marauders to Conclude Regular Season

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Armed with a six-game winning steak, the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team returns home to finish the regular season this week. The Dragons host Minot State at 6 p.m. on Friday and concludes the weekend on Saturday against Mary at 4 p.m.

MSUM is 16-8 overall and 12-8 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. MSUM is now in fourth place in the NSIC North's Division, just one game behind second place teams Minot State and Mary. The top four teams in each division host a home game in the opening round of the NSIC tournament. With just one win this weekend, MSUM will clinch a first-round home game.

MSUM and Minot State will meet for an 19th time with the Dragons leading the series 14-4.  Minot State won the meeting in December, 72-58 in Minot, N.D. The Dragons will meet Mary for a 33rd time with MSUM leading the series 21-11.  Mary edged the Dragons in a thriller, 77-75 in December in Bismarck, N.D.

About MSUM
The Dragons went 2-0 on the road last weekend, beating Augustana, 78-76 on Friday thanks to 22 points from senior Morgan Zabel. On Saturday, senior Megan Strese scored 19 points to lead MSUM to a 61-50 upset of No. 8-ranked Wayne State.

Zabel leads MSUM at 16.1 points per game, while senior forward Megan Strese averages 13.7 points and a team-best 8.9 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Meghan Roehrich averages 11.7 points per game and is shooting a team-best 88.5 percent from the foul line. Senior guard Haley Thomforde leads with 3.4 assists per game.

MSUM scores 71.8 points per game and is shooting 42.3 percent form the field. The Dragons hit 36.3 percent from three-point range, third-best in the NSIC. MSUM outrebounds its foes, 40.4-32.4 and allows 68.3 points per contest. Opponents are shooting 40.6 percent against the Dragons this year.

Karla Nelson is in her 14th season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 240-156 at the school.

About Minot State
The Beavers are 17-7 overall and 13-7 in the NSIC. They won a pair of games at home last weekend, edging Sioux Falls, 68-67 on Friday and beating Southwest Minnesota State, 76-66 a night later. Senior forward Carly Boag averaged 33.5 points in the two wins.

Boag leads the NSIC in scoring (22.0 points per game) and rebounding (10.8 per game). She is shooting 59.6 percent from the field. Katie Hardy averages 12.5 points per game while Christina Boag averages 11.8. Alisha Jones averages 10.8 points and also averages 4.6 assists per game.

As a team, Minot State scores 74.7 points per game and shoots 45.8 percent from the field. The Beavers outrebound their foes 37.3-36.2 and are allowing 69.5 points per game.

Sheila Green Gerding is in her 19th season as Minot State's head coach with a record of 332-320 at the school.

About Mary
Mary is 15-8 overall and 13-7 in the NSIC. The Marauders, who will face Northern State on Friday prior to facing MSUM, won a pair of close games at home last weekend, beating SMSU, 73-65  on Friday before edging Sioux Falls, 78-75 a night later.

Linda Murray leads Mary at 17.0 points and 9.9 rebounds per game, while Brittney Dietz averages 15.6 points per game. Lindsay Sand averages 11.1 points per game and also averages a team-best 4.3 assists per game.

Mary scores 74.8 points per game and shoots 41.8 percent from the field. The Marauders outrebound their foes 41.5-37.7 and allow 74.7 points per game.

Rick Neumann is in his second season as Mary's head coach with a record of 34-19 at the school.

Roehrich Leads in 3-Point Percentage
Sophomore guard Meghan Roehrich leads the nation in three-point field goal percentage at 49.5 percent (minimum is two made per game). She is at 49.5 percent, more than a full percentage point ahead of Indianapolis's Shelby Wall.

Century Club
The three Dragon seniors -- Megan Strese, Haley Thomforde and Morgan Zabel -- all have surpassed 100 games played at MSUM. Strese and Zabel are at 106 games each while Thomforde is at 104.

Strese and Zabel Join 1,000-Point Club
Megan Strese became the Dragons' 20th player to reach 1,000 career points during MSUM's loss to No. 17 Minnesota State on Jan. 11, 2014. Strese scored less than two minutes into the game to surpass 1,000 for her career. She now has 1,173 career points, 12th-best all-time.

Days later, senior Zabel became the 21st women's player to hit 1,000 career points with her basket in the closing minutes in the win over Winona State on Feb. 1. Zabel is at 1,079 points for her career, 16th-best in school history.

Thomforde Climbs the Assist Ladder
Haley Thomforde climbed into the top 10 in career assists earlier this season. She is now at 326 career assists with two games left in the regular season, a number that ranks her sixth all-time in school history. Thomforde is just nine assists from the top five.

Dragons Rank in Free Throws
MSUM ranks third in the nation in free-throw percentage at 79.4 percent.  Roehrich is 23rd in the nation at 88.5 percent.

Ruling the Boards
The Dragons are proving to be an effective rebounding team in 2013-14. They ranked 17th in the nation in rebounding margin (+7.4), thanks in part to the work on the boards from senior forward Megan Strese, who leads the team at 8.5 rebounds per game.
