Balanced Attack Helps MSUM Roll Past Beavers, 85-55

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Five Minnesota State University Moorhead players scored in double figures as the Dragon men rolled past Minot State, 85-55, in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference basketball action Friday night in Moorhead, Minn.

MSUM improved to 18-7 overall and 14-7 in the league with the win, while Minot State fell to 8-17 overall and 4-17 in the NSIC.

Junior guard Malik Wood paced a balanced Dragon attack with 15 points, while sophomore guard Tyler Vaughan added 14 and senior guard Tarell Clark added 13. Sophomore guard Ngjiol Songolo added 11 points while freshman forward Aaron Lien added 10 points. Clark led with 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals while junior guard Prescott Williams had six points, four assists and three steals.

MSUM shot 58.3 percent (28-of-48) for the game while holding Minot State to 37.5 percent (21-of-56) shooting.

The Dragons opened the game on a 16-4 run over the first 5:55 to take command early in the contest. MSUM, which opened the game by hitting six of its first nine shots, was led by senior forward Taylor Filipek with six points, Vaughan with five and Clark with four during that opening run.

Minot State cut the lead to 20-13, but MSUM scored the next six points -- four coming from Wood -- to push the lead to 26-13. The Dragons took a 33-18 into halftime.

Wood had 10 first-half points to pace MSUM while Vaughan had seven and Filipek six. MSU shot 50 percent (12-of-24) from the field in the first half while holding the Beavers to just 25 percent (7-of-28).

In the second half, Minot State cut the lead to 37-25, but MSUM quickly regained the momentum with 12 straight points to build a commanding 49-25 lead. Six different Dragons scored during that run with Wood and Lien leading the way with three each. From there, MSUM was never challenged, leading by as many as 35 on its way to the victory.

Filipek finished with seven points for MSUM while sophomore center Isaac Sevlie had six points, four rebounds and three blocks off the bench.

The Dragons wrap up the weekend with a game against Mary at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Nemzek.
