Dragon Women See Winning Streak End in 79-56 Loss to Minot State

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end on Friday night as the Dragons fell to Minot State, 79-56 at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.

MSUM fell to 16-9 overall and 12-9 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with the loss, while Minot State improved to 18-7 overall and 14-7 in the league.

Senior forward Megan Strese was the lone Dragon in double figures with 14 points and seven rebounds.  Senior forward Morgan Zabel and sophomore guard Meghan Roehrich had nine points each.

The Dragons held a 15-13 lead with 13:19 left in the first half after a basket by sophomore forward Leah Miller.  The Beavers went on an 11-4 run to take a 24-19 lead and led for the rest of the half, taking a 35-28 lead into halftime.

MSUM shot just 39.1 percent (9-of-23) in the first half, compared to 45.2 percent (14-of-31) for the Beavers. MSUM was 0-of-7 from three-point range in the first half. All nine Dragon players who saw playing time in the first half scored, led by nine points from Megan Strese. No other Dragon had more than three points in the first half.

The Beavers opened the second half with four straight points to push the lead into double figures (11) at 39-28 less than a minute into the second half. MSUM scored six points in a row -- three coming from redshirt freshman Morgan Banasik and three coming from Strese -- to climb within 39-34 with 17 minutes left.

Minot State went on a decisive 13-3 run to push the lead to 52-37 with 12:55 left, and the Dragons never got closer than 12 the rest of the way.

Sophomore forward Savanna Handevidt had five points, six rebounds, two blocks and a team-high two steals for MSUM.

The Dragons will play host to Mary at 4 p.m. on Saturday to conclude the regular season. With a win, MSUM will earn a first-round home game in the NSIC tournament on Wednesday.

Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game:  The Dragons have now lost three of their past four games to Minot State. The only other NSIC teams to have beaten the Dragons at least three of the past four are St. Cloud State, Northern State and Minnesota State,  Mankato.
