SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Despite a career-high 31 points from senior forward
Megan Strese, the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team saw its 2013-14 season come to an end on Wednesday as the Dragons fell to Augustana, 90-79, in the first round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Sanford Health Tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D.
MSUM ended the season with a 16-11 mark while Augustana improved to 16-11 on the year.
Strese had an outstanding game to cap off her Dragon career, finishing with 31 points on 10-of-17 shooting while adding 13 rebounds. She was also 11-of-12 from the foul line. Strese finished her Dragon career with 1,228 points, 11th-best in school history.
Senior forward
Morgan Zabel also had a good night for MSUM with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. She had four assists as well. Senior guard
Haley Thomforde added 10 points and three assists in her final game, while freshman
Natalie Van Wyhe had a career-high seven assists.
MSUM shot 49.1 percent (27-of-55) for the game while Augustana shot 42.7 percent (32-of-75). The Dragons had a 39-34 edge in rebounding. The big downfall for MSUM was turnovers, as the Dragons committed 20, which led to a 30-8 edge in points off of turnovers for Augustana.
MSUM led early at 10-9 after a Strese layup but Augustana went on a 14-2 run to take a 23-12 lead with 7:00 left in the half. The Dragons started out cold from the field, hitting just three of their first 16 field goal attempts (18.8 percent).
The Vikings pushed the lead to as many as 19 later in the half and took a 43-29 lead into halftime.Â
Megan Strese had 10 first-half points for the Dragons, who shot 32.1 percent (9-of-28) in the first half.
The Dragons cut the lead to 43-36 early in the second half with a 7-0 run to open the second frame. Thomforde hit a three-pointer to spark the run. MSUM got no closer the rest of the way, however as Augustan pushed the lead to double digits.
Sophomore
Heather Strese added eight points off the bench.
The game was the final one for MSUM seniors Zabel, Thomforde and Strese.

Megan Strese became the first Dragon to score at least 30 in a game since Angie Jetvig pumped in 31 in the Dragons' 97-57 win at Upper Iowa on Feb. 18, 2012.
