Clark Helps MSUM Men Outlast Huskies, 91-88

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Senior Tarell Clark had 27 points and 10 rebounds to help the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team hold off St. Cloud State, 91-88, in action Friday night at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.

MSUM improved to 16-5 overall and 12-5 in the NSIC with the win, while St. Cloud State fell to 15-6 overall and 11-6 in the league.

Clark finished 12-of-14 for the line and scored 23 points in the first half alone. He also added three steals and two assists for the night.

Junior guard Malik Wood had 16 points and four assists for MSUM while sophomore guard Tyler Vaughan had 15 points.

The Dragons shot a blistering 63.9 percent (39-of-61) for the night, compared to 56.9 percent (33-of-58) for the Huskies. MSUM had a 32-edge in rebounds in the game, including 11-6 on the offensive glass.

MSUM saw a 19-point lead wither to one point with 4:40 left after Damarius Cruz buried a three. The Dragons responded with three points in a row -- including a basket by Clark -- to push the lead to 87-83.

Wood scored on back-to-back possessions to push the MSUM lead to 91-85 with 1:47left.  Cruz converted a three-point play with 1:39 left to bring St. Cloud State within 91-88.

The Dragons got a pair of key defensive stops in the final minute when the Huskies attempted a pair of three-pointers to tie, allowing them to preserve a three-point win.

MSUM led 14-12 early but pushed the lead to 32-18 with 9:26 left in the first half after an 18-6 run.  Seven different players scored during that run, led by four points from junior forward Urbane Bingham.

The Dragons led 53-43 at halftime, thanks to 66.7 percent shooting. Clark had 23 first-half points, going 10-of-11 from the floor.

Vaughan hit back-to-back three-pointers to open the second half to push MSUM's lead to 59-43. The lead grew to as many as 19 before St. Cloud State began its rally and cut the lead to one.

Thanks to key baskets from Clark and Wood, and a pair of defensive stops, MSUM held off the rally.

Bingham and sophomore guard Ngijol Songolo both had nine points for MSUM.

The Dragons play host to Minnesota Duluth on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: Tonight's win gave the MSUM men a sweep of St. Cloud State, the first time the Dragons had beat the Huskies twice in a season since the 1981-82 campaign.
