Moorhead, Minn.- The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team played its second home match of the week on Friday evening against Winona State. The Warriors beat the Dragons in three sets, 25-20, 25-17, and 25-23. Leading the way for the Warriors was setter McKenna Larsen, who had 27 assists and five kills while Taylor Goar added 12 kills.
The Dragons are now 6-7 on the season and 1-4 in the NSIC.
Senior
Maggie Gruber led the way for the Dragons with 19 kills. Senior
Sam Sullivan led the team in assists and digs with 16 and 10, respectively. Junior
Kaitlin VanWinkle and sophomore
Kelsey Hartkopf led the team in total blocks, each with two.
In the first set, both teams battled closely until the Warriors scored four straight points to open a 21-17 lead thanks to two service aces from Goar. Â The final kill was put away by Kylea Roeglin after a set from Larsen, to give the set to Winona State 25-20.
In the second set, Winona State used three kills from Danielle Rampart to jump out to a 14-9 lead. The Warriors controlled the entirety of the set and won 25-17 heading into the break.
MSUM came out firing in the third set, compiling six kills from Gruber and VanWinkle to take a 15-7 lead. Winona State fought back however and retook the lead for good at 20-19 after a service ace from Kalyn Biever. The Warriors went on to take the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
MSUM is back on the court again tomorrow evening for a homecoming Saturday matchup against Upper Iowa. First serve is at 5 p.m. from Nemzek Fieldhouse.
