MINOT, N.D. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team battled back from a 13-point second-half deficit to record a 67-64 road win over Minot State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday night in Minot, N.D.
Morgan BanasikMSUM improved to 7-7 overall and 6-4 in the NSIC with the win while Minot State fell to 7-9 overall and 2-6 in the league.
Junior guard
Meghan Roehrich led the Dragons with 26 points, while sophomore guard
Morgan Banasik added 12 points. Junior forward
Savanna Handevidt had 10 points and led with six rebounds. Sophomore guard
Natalie Van Wyhe and Roehrich each led with three assists.
The Dragons shot 44.2 percent (23-of-52) from the field, compared to 48.1 percent (26-of-54) for Minot State. Minot had a 34-29 edge in rebounds.
MSUM faced a 48-35 deficit with 15:09 left but climbed back into the game by outscoring the Beavers 21-8 over the next eight minutes. That run, keyed by seven points from Roehrich, five points from junior
Heather Strese and threes from freshman forward
Cassidy Thorson and Banasik, tied the game at 56-56.
The Dragons held a 62-60 lead after a three-point play from Roehrich. The Beavers tied the game at 64-64 with 2:22 left but MSUM kept them off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Roehrich hit a free throw to put MSUM up 65-64 with 1:13 left, and with 24 seconds left, Van Wyhe buried two foul shots to put MSUM up 67-64.
Minot State had a chance at a three-pointer to tie with eight seconds left but MSUM got the stop to preserve the three-point lead and win.
In the first half, MSUM led 25-24 with 5:46 left after a Banasik three, but Minot State closed the half on a 9-2 run to take a 33-27 lead into the break.
The Beavers pushed their lead to double digits five minutes into the second half before the Dragons mounted their comeback.
Despite being limited to 17 minutes because of foul trouble, Strese managed seven points in 17 minutes.
MSUM is at the University of Sioux Falls for a 6 p.m. game next Friday in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: The Dragons improved to 7-7 tonight with their win in Minot today. They were also 7-7 two seasons ago after dropping a 68-55 home decision to Northern State on Jan. 15, 2013. The Dragons went on to win their next five games in a row after that loss and ultimately finished 16-12.
