MSUM Women Continue Road Swing at Sioux Falls and SMSU

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team completes a stretch of four consecutive road games with a pair of contests this week. MSUM will play at the University of Sioux Falls for a 6 p.m. game on Friday and conclude the weekend at Southwest Minnesota State for a 5 p.m. game on Saturday in Marshall, Minn.

MSUM and Sioux Falls will meet for a fourth time, with the Dragons having won all three previous meetings, including a thrilling 68-67 win over the Cougars on Jan. 3, 2014 in Sioux Falls. MSUM and SMSU will meet for a 78th time with the Mustangs holding a 42-35 series lead. The Dragons won 70-52 in Marshall on Jan. 4, 2014.

MSUM split on the road last weekend, falling to Mary, 69-64 before rebounding with a 67-64 win over Minot State on Saturday. Junior guard Meghan Roehrich averaged 20.5 points in the two games to pace the Dragons, who are 3-4 on the road this season.

The Dragons are led in scoring by Roehrich, who averages 17.4 points per game. Junior forward Heather Strese averages 11.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Natalie Van Wyhe leads with 41 assists while sophomore guard Morgan Banasik and Roehrich lead with 16 steals.  Redshirt freshman forward Drew Sannes is averaging 1.4 blocks per game. MSUM averages 64.1 points per game on offense and is shooting 36.6 percent from the field.  

On defense MSUM is allowing 65.7 points per game. The Dragons outrebound their opponents 40.1-35.6.

Karla Nelson is in her 15th season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 247-166 at the school.

About Sioux Falls
The Cougars are 11-3 overall and 7-3 in the NSIC. They split on the road last weekend, falling to Winona State, 69-52 on Jan. 9 before beating Upper Iowa, 75-61 on Saturday. Jaicee Ulmer averaged 13.5 points on the weekend for the Cougars.

USF, which is 8-1 at home this season, is led by Taylor Varsho at 12.1 points per game. Sam Knecht and Ulmer average 11.9 points per game apiece. Knecht averages 7.3 rebounds per game and also leads with 25 total blocks. Varsho is averaging 3.9 assists per game for the Cougars, who are scoring 73.6 points per game. USF is shooting 41.9 percent from the field.

On defense, USF allows 61.8 points per game and teams are shooting 37.7 percent against the Cougars this season, The Cougars outrebound their foes 44.2-37.1.

Travis Traphagen is in his sixth season as the Cougars' head coach with a record of 111-55 at the school.

About SMSU
The Mustangs are 1-13 overall and 1-9 in the NSIC. They lost a pair of games on the road last weekend, falling at Upper Iowa, 74-63 on Friday and Winona State, 56-48 on Saturday. Their lone win of 2014-15 came on Jan. 3 when they beat Augustana 77-71 in Marshall.

Annessa Rosch leads SMSU at 12.6 points per game, while Lauren Hedlund is averaging 11.0 points per game. Hedlund leads at 6.0 rebounds per game while Rosch has a team-high 43 assists.  As a team the Mustangs average 60.4 points per game and are shooting 38.8 percent from the field.

Defensively SMSU allows 76.8 points per game. Teams are shooting 48.1 percent against the Mustangs this year. SMSU is being outrebounded by its opponents 38.8-33.1 this season.

Allison Kruger is in her fifth season as SMSU's head coach with a record of 22-100.
