Isaac Sevlie scored a career-high 31 points, but the No. 9-ranked Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team came up short against No. 11-ranked California Baptist on Friday, dropping an 84-80 overtime decision to the Lancers at the CCA Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, Calif.
MSUM fell to 0-1 on the year while Cal Baptist improved to 1-0.
Sevlie finished 11-of-20 from the field and 9-of-11 from the line to lead the Dragons. He also had a team-high nine rebounds. Junior forward
Ayob Ayob had 14 points and six rebounds, while junior guard
Arroyo Edwards had nine points. Senior guard
Tyler Vaughan had eight points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Dragons shot 41.8 percent (28-of-67) for the game compared to 46.0 percent (29-of-63) for Cal Baptist. The Lancers had a 44-32 edge in rebounds.
In a game which featured 17 ties and 12 lead changes, MSUM rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to take a 47-44 lead with 13:35 left. From there, the biggest lead for either team was two points; the score at the end of regulation was 68-68.
MSUM led 74-72 with 2:16 left in overtime after Ayob scored. The game was tied at 77-77 before Cal Baptist scored four straight points to take an 81-77 lead with 17 seconds left.
A three-pointer by senior guard
Ngijol Songolo brought MSUM within 81-80 with 10 seconds left. After Cal Baptist hit 1-of-2 free throws, the Dragons missed a three-pointer which would have given them the lead, and Cal Baptist hit two free throws with one second left to ice the game.
The Dragons trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half and was within 38-31 at halftime. Sevlie had 15 first-half points for MSUM.
MSUM is back in action on Saturday against Colorado-Colorado Springs. Game time is 11 a.m. Central time in Anaheim, Calif.
