ANAHEIM, Calif. – The No. 9-ranked Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team earned a 74-71 win over No. 15-ranked Western Washington during the final day of the CCA Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, Calif.

MSUM is now 2-1 on the year while Western Washington fell to 2-1.

Four Dragons scored in double figures, led by senior center Isaac Sevlie with 21 points. Sophomore guard Tanner Kretchman added 14 points, while senior guard Tyler Vaughan had 11 points and a game-high five assists. Junior guard Aaron Lien had 10 points for MSUM. Sevlie led with eight rebounds while junior forward Matt Nelson added seven.

MSUM shot 42.9 percent (27-of-63) for the game, compared to 40.9 percent (27-of-66) for Western Washington. The Vikings had a slight 45-42 edge in rebounds. The big difference in the game was points in the paint, as MSUM had a 42-26 edge in that statistic.

The Dragons faced a 17-7 deficit with 12:35 left in the first half but outscored Western Washington 20-7 over the rest of the first half to take a 27-24 lead into halftime. Kretchman scored seven points during that run while Lien had five.

Western Washington opened the second half on a 7-2 run to take a 31-29 lead with 16:48 left in the game and for the next nine minutes, the game stayed close. The Dragons led 46-45 with 7:32 left before scoring six points in a row – with junior guard Arroyo Edwards, junior forward Ayob Ayob and Sevlie each scoring a basket.

A Sevlie basket gave MSUM its biggest lead of the night at 58-48 with 2:55 left. The Vikings chipped away at the Dragon lead and closed within three on a pair of occasions but the Dragons weathered the storm and prevailed by three.

Ayob and Edwards each had eight points for the Dragons. Kretchman had three assists and was also 7-of-8 from the foul line.

The Dragons are off until Nov. 13 when they compete at the Arkansas Tech Classic. They will open the tournament against Harding at 7:30 p.m. in Russellville, Ark.
