Dragon Women Outlast Northwest Nazarene in Overtime in Season Opener, 92-88

LAS VEGAS – Six Minnesota State University Moorhead players scored in double figures to help the Dragons outlast Northwest Nazarene, 92-88 in overtime in women's basketball at the D2 Vegas Showdown Saturday in Las Vegas.

MSUM is now 1-0 on the year while Northwest Nazarene fell to 0-1.

Junior guard Morgan Banasik led the Dragons with 21 point four assists, while senior forward Heather Strese had 15 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard Natalie Van Wyhe had 11 points while  senior forward Savanna Handevidt, junior guard Jessica Hart and sophomore forward Drew Sannes all had 10 points.

The Dragons shot 50 percent (31-of-62) for the game while the Crusaders shot 43.2 percent (35-of-81). Northwest Nazarene had a 46-40 edge in rebounds. The Dragons were 25-of-37 from the foul line, compared to 13-of-19 for Northwest Nazarene.

Thanks to 58.1 percent shooting, MSUM led 43-30 at halftime. Handevidt had eight points while Banasik and freshman guard Jacky Volkert had seven points apiece.

The Dragon lead grew to 47-30 early in the third quarter after a pair of Strese free throws, and MSUM took a 62-52 lead into the fourth quarter.

Northwest Nazarene chipped away at the Dragon lead in the fourth quarter and a basket with nine seconds left in regulation tied the game at 80-80.

MSUM trailed 87-84 with 3:53 left in overtime but outscored the Crusaders 8-1 to close the game to secure the win.  Strese converted a key three-point play and had four points during that run while Hart and Banasik had two each.

The Dragon bench outscored Northwest Nazarene 29-17. Volkert finished with seven points in her collegiate regular-season debut. Sannes had six rebounds and four blocks.

The Dragons wrap up the weekend on Sunday against nonconference foe Central Missouri. Game time is 10:30 a.m. Central time.
