MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team opens conference play Tuesday night with a match against Northern State University at 8 p.m. The following week, the Dragons will play host to Jamestown on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The game against Northern State University will be broadcast on WDAY'Z Xtra.
The 1-2 Wolves are coached by Paul Sather who is in his sixth year at the helm of the program. NSU is led by senior guard Skye Warwick who is averaging 22.0 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. Redshirt sophomore guard DJ Pollard is a force on the boards averaging 7.7 rebounds per game to go along with 12.7 ppg. As a team, the Wolves are averaging 86.0 points per game (3rd in the NSIC) and are fifteenth in the conference in rebounds per game with 33.0.
In its game next week, the Dragons will face non-conference opponent University of Jamestown on Tuesday evening. The Jimmies are 5-3 on the season and are led by senior guard Brequan Tucker who is averaging 20.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Junior guard Logan Brown has 13.6 points and 2.9 rebounds per game while junior guard Jake Hagler 11.5 points per game and 12 total steals on the year. The Jimmies are coached by first year head coach Danny Neville.
A LOOK BACK AT LAST WEEK...
The Dragons took on neighboring rival Concordia College last week at Nemzek Fieldhouse where it beat the Cobbers, 90-82. Junior forward
Ayob Ayob recorded his first career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Senior forward
Isaac Sevlie put up 18 points and had three blocks while sophomore guard
Tanner Kretchman had 15 points and two assists for the Dragons. Junior forward
Aaron Lien had 14 points and five assists.
The Dragons shot 55.9 percent (33-of-59) compared to 45.5 percent (30-of-66) for the Cobbers. MSUM won the rebounding battle 42-31. The Dragons led for 36:15 of the game while the Cobbers led for 39 seconds.
The Dragons led the entire second half, although the Cobbers closed within one point on a pair of occasions. MSUM held a 68-66 lead with 8:02 left but scored eight of the next nine points to take a 76-67 lead with 5:40 left. Ayob sparked the run with five points while Edwards had three.
Concordia was as close as five in the final minute, but the Dragons went 3-of-4 from the line in the final 33 seconds to secure the eight-point win.
MSUM led 32-27 at halftime despite shooting only 35.5 percent in the first half. Songolo's seven points led the way.
The second half was close for much of the way until the Dragons pushed the lead to double digits in the final two minutes.
NOTABLES...
The Dragons have dominated thus far in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player-of-the-Week Category. Sevlie was picked as the NSIC Preseason Player of the Year and was named player of the week in week one. He was awarded Player of the Week after being named MVP of the NSIC/GAC Challenge, averaging 21.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game and shooting 58.3 percent from the fields. Sevlie also added four blocked shots and was 15-20 from the free throw line.
Ayob earned Player of the Week honors in week two as he recorded his first double-double at MSUM scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 boards. Ayob finished 6-9 from the field and was 2-4 from beyond the arc.
