Dragon Men Roll to 90-80 Victory Over UMD

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team continued its winning ways Saturday night at Nemzek Fieldhouse defeating Minnesota Duluth in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play, 90-80.

MSUM, which has won 12 in a row, is now 12-1 overall and 5-0 in the NSIC, while Minnesota Duluth fell to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the league.

The Dragons were led by senior center Isaac Sevlie's 23 points and five rebounds. Junior forward Ayob Ayob added 17 points while senior guard Tyler Vaughan contributed with 12 points and two steals. Junior guard Aaron Lien collected 11 points and two steals while sophomore guard Tanner Kretchman and senior guard Ngijol Songolo had seven points apiece.

MSUM was 29-of-58 from the field (50 percent) and grabbed 38 rebounds.  The Bulldogs shot 48 percent from the field and collected 33 boards.

The Dragons had a big first half offensively, shooting 59.4 percent (19-of-32) from the field, including 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) from the three-point line.  Sevlie led MSUM with 14 points in the opening half while Ayob had 13. Kretchman had six first-half assists.

A big key in the first half was turnovers. The Dragons had only two while UMD had nine, which led to a 15-0 edge in points off of turnovers for MSUM.

The Dragons extended its lead to 20 with 16 minutes remaining in the game on a reverse layup from Sevlie. Vaughan hit a triple and brought the score to 67-43 to give the Dragons their largest lead of the second half. Ayob collected a bucket with just over a minute to go to seal the game for the Dragons.

The Dragons will play at Northern State for a 6 p.m. game on Dec. 19. They will face nonconference Crossroads College on Dec. 20 at 3 p.m. to wrap up the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule.

Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game:  The Dragons have started at least 5-0 in the NSIC every other year under Chad Walthall. The 2011/2012 squad won their first seven in a row before losing at the University of Mary, the 2013/2014 team went 5-0 before losing at Northern St. and now tonight's win pushes the Dragons' conference mark to 5-0.
