WAYNE, Neb. – Redshirt freshman
Drew Sannes recorded her first career double-double, but the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team fell short on the road on Friday, losing to No. 22-ranked Wayne State 81-60 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action in Wayne, Neb.
MSUM fell to 11-10 overall and 10-7 in the conference while Wayne State improved to 20-3 overall and 14-3 in the league with its 11th straight win.
Sannes scored a career-high 16 points and added a career-high 12 rebounds to pace the Dragons. Junior guard
Meghan Roehrich added 15 points and a team-high six assists while junior forward
Savanna Handevidt added 13 points.
The Wildcats shot 54.5 percent (30-of-55) from the field, compared to 38.7 percent (24-of-62) for the Dragons. MSUM had a 37-29 edge in rebounds but also committed 21 turnovers, which led to a 23-10 advantage in points off of turnovers for Wayne State.
The Dragons led 5-2 early after a layup by Handevidt with 18:33 left, but the Wildcats surged into the lead with an 11-2 run and MSUM never led again.
MSUM was down by as many as nine (22-13) in the first half but climbed within 26-24 with 4:13 left after a Sannes basket. Wayne State took a 33-28 lead into halftime.
Handevidt and Roehrich had eight points apiece to lead MSUM in the first half.
Wayne State opened the second half on a 19-9 run over the first 7:49 to push the lead to 52-37 and the Dragons never got closer than 12 the rest of the night.
MSUM is at Augustana on Saturday. The game begins at 4 p.m. in Sioux Falls, S.D.
