WHAT'S AHEAD...
MOORHEAD, Minn. – The No. 7-ranked Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team is back on the road this weekend with games at Minnesota-Crookston and Bemidji State. Both are Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchups.Â
Friday night, the Dragons will travel to the 3-13 Golden Eagles who are 1-11 in the NSIC. The Dragons hold a 26-7 lead in the all-time series over the Golden Eagles. In their last meeting, the MSUM defeated Crookston 66-44. On the season, UMC is averaging 67.3 points and 30.8 rebounds per game led by sophomore guard CJ Polk's 11.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Redshirt-freshman guard Gable Smith has 4.5 rebounds per game while averaging 5.6 ppg. As a team, the Golden Eagles have 10.7 assists, 4.8 steals, and 3.4 blocks per game. UMC is coached by Dan Weisse who is in his second season as head coach for the Golden Eagles. The game will be played at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, MSUM will report to Bemidji State University for a 6 p.m. matchup against the Beavers. The 8-8 (5-7 NSIC) Beavers are coached Mike Boschee who is in his fourth season at the helm of the program. As a team, the Beavers are averaging 73.3 points and 37.1 rebounds per game. Additionally, they have 6.3 steals and 3.8 blocks per game. Junior forward Ben Best leads the Beavers with 13.9 points per game accompanied by 6.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game. Senior guard DJ Anderson has 10.5 points per game while freshman guard Calvin Harrington has 9.1 ppg.Â
A LOOK BACK AT LAST WEEK...
Last Friday the Dragons hosted NSIC opponent the University of Sioux Falls Cougars where MSUM defeated them 78-55. MSUM was led by senior center Isaac Sevlie's 20 points and seven rebounds while junior guard Aaron Lien added 12 points, five rebounds and two assists. Sophomore guard Tanner Kretchman and junior forward Ayob Ayob had 11 points apiece.Â
The Dragons shot 47.8 percent (22-of-46) for the game while holding the Cougars to 34.5 percent shooting (19-of-55).
On Saturday, the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University came to Nemzek Fieldhouse where a red-hot shooting performance from the field sparked the Dragons to a 115-82 win over the Mustangs.Â
The Dragons shot a season-best 64.6 percent (42-of-65) from the field in the game, including a season-best 64.3 percent (18-of-28) from three-point range. The 18 three-pointers were just one away from tying a single-game school record of 19 (set in 2011 against Concordia). The 115 points scored were the most by the Dragons in an NSIC game.
Nine different MSUM players scored at least four points; six different players hit three-pointers. Senior forward Isaac Sevlie scored 21 points to lead MSUM, while sophomore guard Tanner Kretchman had 19 points and a tied a career-high with 10 assists. Senior guard Tyler Vaughan had 19 points and six assists, while junior forward Ayob Ayob had 17 points and three assists off the bench. Senior guard Ngijol Songolo was the fifth Dragon in double figures at 15 points. Junior guard Aaron Lien had five rebounds and five points.
