Balanced Attack Helps Dragon Women Down Mary, 75-58

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team had three players score 14 points each in a 75-58 win over Mary in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Friday night in Moorhead, Minn.

MSUM improved to 8-3 overall and 6-3 in the NSIC with the win while Mary fell to 8-9 overall and 2-7 in the league.

Senior forward Savanna Handevidt had 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds for MSUM, while senior forward Heather Strese added 14 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Cassidy Thorson added 14 points as well. Junior guard Natalie Van Wyhe added 10 points and had a game-high four assists and three steals. Junior guard Morgan Banasik added nine points and six rebounds for MSUM.

MSUM shot 40 percent (22-of-55) from the field while holding the Marauders to just 33.3 percent shooting (19-of-57). The Dragons had a 44-32 edge in rebounds and had an 18-8 edge in second-chance points in the win.

The Dragons led 34-30 with 4:17 left in the first half but went on a 9-2 run to push the lead into double digits for the first time at 43-32 with 30 seconds left in the half.  Handevidt had four points during that run while Thorson drained a three.

MSUM took a 43-34 lead into halftime, thanks to 11 points from Thorson and nine from Handevidt. The Dragons host 40.6 percent (13-of-32) in the first half, compared to 40.7 percent (11-of-27) for the Marauders.

Threes by Banasik and Handevidt to open the second half pushed the Dragon lead to 49-34 with 8:22 left in the third. The lead later grew to 22 points in the final seconds of the third and MSUM took a 61-41 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Dragon lead never dropped below 12 in the fourth quarter as the Dragons rolled to the win.

Sophomore forward Drew Sannes added nine points and two blocks for the Dragons, who play host to Minot State at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: Tonight's win, coupled with the Dragons' 62-61 win in Bismarck on Dec. 5, marks the first two game season sweep over the Marauders since the University of Mary joined the NSIC in the 2006-07 season.
