MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's swimming and diving team got the season off to a strong start on Friday with four victories at the Northern Michigan quad. The Dragons had several good performances as they opened their season.
MSUM went 1-2 in duals, beating Northern State 218-95 while losing to Northern Michigan, 179.5-139.5 and St. Cloud State, 200-119.
The Dragons won six events against St. Cloud State: 400 medley relay, 100 IM, 50 back, 50 free, 100 back and 400 IM. They also beat Northern Michigan in seven events: 400 Medley Relay, 50 back, 100 fly, 50 free, 100 free, 100 back and 400 IM.
"We performed as well as we ever have in our first meet of the season and put up some of the best times in NCAA DII so far this year," MSUM head coach
Todd Peters said. "Our medley relay is particularly strong. We had to make a few line-up changes because of some injuries and our team really stepped up to fill in the gaps. Our freshmen group was impressive with many lifetime bests and top times for our team. We look forward to even better performances on Saturday."
Junior
Erin Sullivan won two events to lead the way. She won the 50 backstroke in 26.84 and won the 100 back in 58.20.
Freshman
Breah Anderson won the 50 free in 24.58 – the 10th-fastest time in DII so far this season -- with senior
Ashley Higgins third in 25.12. Anderson was third in the 100 free in 54.18.
MSUM's 400 free relay was victorious in 3:06.59. That consisted of sophomore
Natalie Kampa, sophomore
Linnea Johnson, sophomore
Lexi Heil and freshman
Haley Roed.
MSUM's 400 medley relay was second in 3:56.43, which is the 10th-fastest time in school history and the third-fastest in DII this year. That consisted of Sullivan, Beynon, freshman
Leticia Rodovalho and Anderson. Sullivan's lead-off 100 backstroke of 57.25 ranks her 3
rd this year in DII while Beynon's 100 breaststroke split of 1:07.85 was a lifetime best and is 10th all-time for the Dragons. Rodovalho's butterfly split of 58.42 was sixth all-time for the Dragons while Anderson's freestyle split of 52.91 was ninth all-time for the Dragons.
Beynon was second in the 100 IM in 1:02.25, while senior
Danica Scheef was seventh in 1:04.85. Beynon was second in the 400 IM in 4:39.64 (fifth-fastest in DII this year) and third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.65.
Senior
Amanda Groebner was fourth in 1-meter diving at 207.25 while sophomore
Amber Westereng was sixth at 187.60. Groebner was sixth in the 3-meter diving at 184.95 with Westereng seventh in 182.75.
Rodovalho was third in the 100 fly in 1:00.77 while
Natalie Kampa was sixth in 1:01.88. Rodovalho was fifth in the 50 fly in 27.99. Senior
Madison Kuznia was sixth in the 100 back in 1:01.19.
Senior
Shae Bodrero was fourth in the 50 breaststroke in 32.51.
Danica Scheef was seventh in the 200 free in 2:02.71 Senior
Danae Scheef was sixth in the 500 free in 5:30.39.
Day 2 of the quad begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Marquette, Mich.
