MSUM Women’s Volleyball Falls Short at Minnesota State Mankato, 3-2

MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team dropped a three-set contest at Minnesota State Mankato on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons fell 26-28, 25-20, 25-27, 26-24 and 15-9.

 

MSUM fell to 9-15 overall and 4-12 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Minnesota State Mankato improved to 13-11 overall and 7-9 in NSIC play.

 

Junior captain hitter Carly Masloski had 14 kills while hitting .314 at the net. Redshirt freshman setter Makayla Wenzel finished the match with 32 set assists and 11 digs for the Dragons. Senior hitter Tyann Caspers had 10 kills, two digs and two blocks, while redshirt freshman hitter Ellie Rutten had nine kills. Sophomore libero Monica Vega had 22 total digs on the day.

 

MSUM hit .185 for the match while the Mavericks hit .270.

 

The Dragons started the first set off with a win in extra points, 28-27. Late in the set with the score tied 26-26, redshirt freshman Sarah Hagler powered home a kill, while Vega followed up with a service ace to end the first set.

 

The second set saw MSUM tied with Mankato 15-15. The Mavericks rattled off five out of six points to build a 20-16 lead on the way to a 25-20 run. Caspers had three kills in the second set.

 

MSUM rebounded off the second set loss to win the third set in extra points once again 27-25. Down 11-15, MSUM rattled off five straight points, including a kill from Masloski and Hagler, to go ahead 16-15. Another Mavericks run saw MSUM down 19-17. A kill from junior Taylor Liesemeyer helped MSUM tie the set, and move on to win 27-25.

 

Ahead 2-1 in the match the Dragons couldn't find a way to close it out in the fourth set. Behind in the set 23-21 Rutten hammered home a kill while the Mavericks made an attacking error allowing the Dragons to tie the set at 23-23, but three of the next four points went to Mankato as MSUM fell 24-26.

 

The Mavericks had a hot start in the fifth set jumping out to a 9-3 lead. After MSUM cut the lead to 8-11 – including kills from Hagler, Liesemeyer and Rutten – Mankato rattled off four of the next five points to win the fifth set and the match.

 

Up next, MSUM returns home on Friday, Nov. 4 for a NSIC matchup with Sioux Falls at 7 p.m.
