MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's swimming and diving team set four pool records on its way to a 187-75 win over Augustana in a dual meet on Saturday at the Nemzek Pool in Moorhead, Minn. MSUM is now 5-4 in duals this season.
Junior
Erin Sullivan set a new pool record in the 200 backstroke while the Dragon 400 medley relay also set a new pool record, with Sullivan setting a 100 backstroke pool record split in that event. Sophomore
Taylor Beynon also set a new pool record in the 400 IM.
"Our goal was to break a few pool records and we accomplished that with four new records. We also wanted to show the members of the NCAA DII coaches poll that we deserved to be ranked in the top 25 and I think we made a good argument for that with our performances today," MSUM head coach
Todd Peters said. "Our 200 free relay jumped to No. 8 in the country with a time almost a second faster than we did rested at conference last season. We still have the fifth-ranked 400 medley relay and
Erin Sullivan,
Breah Anderson,
Taylor Beynon and
Leticia Rodovalho all have individual times ranked in the top 25 in NCAA DII. We have two more weeks of training and a meet next weekend against Concordia to fine tune our events before we face St. Cloud and Mankato at the St. Thomas Invite."
Sullivan's outstanding season continued. She won the 200 back in 2:05.10, shattering the pool record she set last season by more than two seconds. That time is top in the NSIC and seventh in all of Division II.
The 400 medley relay set a new pool record of 3:57.87, topping the previous time of 3:58.58. That relay consisted of Sullivan, sophomore
Taylor Beynon, freshman
Leticia Rodovalho and freshman
Breah Anderson. Sullivan also broke the 100 backstroke pool record with her lead-off split of 57.57, breaking the pool record of 57.62. Sullivan later lowered that mark with a 57.28 to capture the 100 backstroke individual event.
Sullivan also anchored the winning 200 free relay, which won with 1:38.08, which is eighth in all of Division II and first in the NSIC. Senior
Ashley Higgins, freshman
Breah Anderson and sophomore
Natalie Kampa teamed up with Sullivan for that win.
Beynon's early-season success continued. Her 1:07.19 100 breaststroke split was a lifetime best and she broke the 400 IM pool record with a 4:38.53 to win that event.. This was an impressive swim as it was faster than what she swam in conference prelims last season and came just 20 minutes after she swam a 5:21.61 in the 500 freestyle (to place second).
The Dragon sprint freestyle duo of
Breah Anderson and
Ashley Higgins finished first and second, respectively, in the 50 freestyle with season-best times. Anderson's winning time of 24.48 is second-fastest in the NSIC while Higgins' 24.71 is third-best. Anderson also claimed the 100 free in 53.69 with Higgins third in 55.58.
Freshman Téa Nyland had an excellent meet, winning the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, both with lifetime-best performances. Nyland won the 100 breast in 1:10.08 and also won the 200 breast in 2:34.59. It was the first time Nyland competed in the 200 breast; she was primarily a competitor in the butterfly in high school.
Rodovalho grabbed lifetime-best wins in the 100 butterfly (1:00.38) and 200 butterfly (2:11.03) and was on the record setting 400 medley relay.
Senior
Danica Scheef shaved over a second off her lifetime best 200 freestyle and was out-touched in that event 2:01.27 to 2:01.28. Freshman
McKenna Togstad was second in the 1,650 free.
Kampa recorded season-bests in all of her events. Kampa's 100 butterfly split of 59.51 on the 'B' 400 Medley Relay was the best for the Dragons on any relay. Her 2:17.07 in the 200 butterfly vaults her into seventh in the conference and her 100 butterfly time of 1:00.62 puts her in eighth in the conference. Kampa finished second in both the fly events. Kampa was the third leg on the winning 200 free relay with a 25.10 split.
The divers competed exhibition since Augustana does not field diving. Senior
Amanda Groebner swept both diving events with a 219.30 on the 1-meter and 2:15.75 on the 3-meter. Freshman Freshman
Chantell Mindt was second in 1-meter at 217.55 and third in 3-meter at 198.25, both lifetime-bests. Freshman
Noelle Berg also had lifetime-bests in 1-meter diving (216.75) and 3-meter diving (198.25).
