MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team continues action this week at the Quincy Subway Tip-Off Classic in Quincy, Ill. The Dragons will face Quincy at 7 p.m. on Friday and wrap up the trip on Saturday against Maryville.
MSUM will meet both Quincy and Maryville for the first time in women's basketball.
The nonconference games will be second and third games of the year for MSUM. The Dragons will hold their home opener on Nov. 23 against Valley City State and their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener on Nov. 26 at Northern State.
About the Dragons
MSUM (0-1) opened the season with a 62-54 loss to Harding in Olathe, Kan. Junior forward
Drew Sannes led MSUM with 17 points and nine rebounds, while junior guard
Cassidy Thorson had 15 points on 5-of-8 three-point shooting. Sophomore guard
Jacky Volkert had eight points and a career-high eight rebounds while senior guard
Natalie Van Wyhe had nine points and five assists.
Sannes leads MSUM at 17.0 points per game while Thorson had 15 points. Van Wyhe averages nine points and five assists. Sannes leads with 9.0 rebounds per game while Volkert averages 8.0. MSUM shoots 35.7 percent from the field and averages 54 points a contest.
On defense MSUM allows 62 points per game and is surrendering 47.3 percent shooting to the opposition. MSUM outrebounds its foes 34-32.
Karla Nelson is in her 17th season as the MSUM head coach with a record of 278-178 at the school.
About Quincy
Quincy is 0-2 on the season. The Hawks lost to Grand Valley State, 83-45 and Northern Michigan, 59-46 to open the season on Nov. 12 and 13.
No Quincy players average in double figures. Anika Webster leads at 9.5 points per game, while Nikia Edom is at 8.5. Webster averages 4.0 rebounds per game while Selina Barnes is at 3.0 assists per game. Quincy averages 45.5 points per game and shoots 32.3 percent from the field.
The Hawks are allowing 71.0 points per game and teams are shooting 36.7 percent from the field against them. Teams are outrebounding Quincy 39.5-25.5.
Jen Garber is in her sixth season as Quincy's head coach with a record of 100-46 at the school.
About Maryville
Maryville is 1-0 entering the week. The Saints opened the season with a 58-44 win over Greenville on Nov. 12. Three Saints scored in double figures, led by Stephanie Sherwood with 15 points and Brooklyn Chaffin with 13. Alex Wolf had a game-high 13 rebounds.
Sherwood leads Maryville at 15.0 points per game while Chaffin averages 13.0 and Amanda Ponce 10. Chaffin leads at 5.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game. As a team Maryville scores 58 point per game and shoots 38.6 percent from the field, including 25 percent from three-point range.
Maryville outrebounds its foes 38-35 and is allowing 44 points a game.
Collin Lanam is in his first season as Maryville's head coach.
