Defense Carries Dragon Women Past Maryville, 61-42

QUINCY, Ill. — For the second straight day, the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team used a strong defensive effort to earn a 61-42 win over Maryville University  at the Quincy Women's Basketball Holiday Classic on Saturday in Quincy, Ill.

MSUM is now 2-1 on the year while Maryville is 1-2.

The all-tournament team will be announced at later time after the conclusion of the event.
 
How it happened…
The Dragon defense was once again strong, holding Maryville to 34 percent shooting (17-of-50) while forcing 17 turnovers. MSUM limited Maryville to just 18.2 percent (4-of-22) shooting from three-point range.

MSUM had a commanding 39-26 edge in rebounds, thanks to a career-high 16 rebounds from junior forward Drew Sannes.

The Dragons shot 45.3 percent (24-of-53) for the game.

The third quarter was the difference in the game. MSUM outscored Maryville 21-0 in the third quarter to stretch a six-point halftime lead to 45-18 after three quarters. While the defense dominated the quarter for MSUM, a balanced offense also keyed that stretch, led by five points from sophomore guard Jacky Volkert and four each from junior Cassidy Thorson and Sannes.

MSUM led by as many as 27 in the game.
 
Impact Performances…
Sannes had her second double-double of the weekend with 14 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Thorson led with 17 points, while Volkert added seven points. Freshman guard Maddie Erickson and freshman forward Megan Hintz each contributed six points off the bench.

Senior guard Jessica Hart and Hintz each had four rebounds off the bench.

Freshman guard Morgan Ham, Volkert and Hart had three assists each.

Senior guard Natalie Van Wyhe had a game-high four steals.

The Dragons make their home debut on Wednesday when they host Valley City State at 6 p.m.
