MOORHEAD, Minn. — Keyed by a big night from several freshmen, the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's swimming and diving team rolled to a 191-60 win over Concordia College in front of a capacity crowd Friday night at the Nemzek Pool in Moorhead, Minn.
MSUM is now 6-4 in duals this season while Concordia is 0-2.
Freshman Téa Nyland had a big night for MSUM, winning three events. She won the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.39, the 200 breaststroke in 2:33.83 (lifetime-best) and 100 IM in 1:05.39.
Freshman
Leticia Rodovalho was also a multi-winner as she won both the 200 butterfly in 2:13.27 and the 500 freestyle in 5:31.00.
MSUM's 200 'A' medley relay won in 1:53.93. That consisted of Kostiuk, Nyland, Rodovalho and Roed. The 200 'D' relay, competing as an exhibition, swam a 1:48.32, narrowly missing the school record of 1:48.12. That consisted of Sullivan, Beynon, Kampa and
Breah Anderson.That time moves the Dragons into the top spot in the conference.
Freshmen
Haley Roed and
Alex King split the 50 and 100 freestyle events much like they did as high school competitors in Minnesota Section 8A the last four years. King won the 50 in 25.63 and finished second in the 100 in 57.62 while Roed won the 100 (56.63) and finished second in the 50 (25.70).
Sophomore
Amber Westereng improved her lifetime best 1-meter diving 11 dive score by 50 points with a 381.30. That score is just 8.7 points from the national pre-qualifying score.
Freshman
McKenna Togstad won the 200 free in 2:04.19 and was second in the 200 back in 2:18.44.
Senior
Kelly Engbring had a season-best in winning the 1000 freestyle in 11:17.54 and climbed to 11th in the conference.
Freshman
Abby Kostiuk won the 100 back in 1:03.57 and also won the 200 back with a lifetime-best of 2:17.37.
Senior
Danica Scheef swam a lifetime best 200 freestyle for the third week in a row with a 2:00.21 in the exhibition heat. Freshman
Kayla Andersen was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.60.
"We always use the Concordia meet to feature our freshmen in the scoring heats and they came through with many great performances," MSUM head coach
Todd Peters said. "Kostiuk, Nyland, Rodovalho, King and Roed all had a great night. It is fun watching them fight for the wins in their events. There is a great deal of pride in our team and everyone is very supportive. The upperclass team members made of point of celebrating the success of their younger teammates tonight. We also had a packed crowd for the third weekend in a row and it is an exciting atmosphere for us whenever we are at home."
MSUM will compete at the St. Thomas Invite on Nov. 11-12 in St. Paul, Minn.
