Dragon Women Host No. 18 Northern State in NSIC North Showdown

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team will host No. 18-ranked Northern State in a key Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division matchup on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Nemzek Hall. MSUM has won eight straight games heading into the contest.

The Dragons (8-1, 5-0 NSIC) are tied for first in the NSIC with Augustana with 5-0 conference records. In the NSIC North, the Dragons lead the Wolves by one game in the standings. Saturday will be the final regular-season meeting between the two teams.

MSUM and Northern State will meet for a 63rd time with the Wolves leading the series 47-25.  The Dragons won the earlier meeting on Nov. 26 in Aberdeen, S.D., by a 51-44 margin. Junior guard Cassidy Thorson had 18 points for MSUM while junior forward Drew Sannes had 15 and freshman forward Megan Hintz added 13.

The Dragons held the Wolves to just 30 percent shooting (15-of-50) in the contest.

About the Dragons
MSUM improved to 8-1 on the season with two convincing road wins last weekend. The Dragons beat Minnesota Crookston, 87-60 on Friday thanks to 21 points from junior Cassidy Thorson, and followed with a 102-50 rout of Bemidji State on Saturday with Drew Sannes leading at 28 points.

Sannes leads MSUM at 17.4 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. She is shooting 52.8 percent from the field. Thorson averages 15.8 while sophomore guard Jacky Volkert is at 10.8. Volkert leads in assists per game at 4.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game. Sannes leads with 24 blocks. As a team the Dragons are scoring 70.2 points per game and shooting an NSIC-best 45.1 percent from the field.

On defense MSUM is allowing 50.9 points per game, which is fifth-best in the nation and best in the NSIC. Teams are shooting only 35 percent against MSUM this season including 25.5 percent from three-point range. The Dragons outrebound their foes 39.1-29.9.

Karla Nelson is in her 17th season as the MSUM head coach with a record of 286-178 at the school.

About Northern State
The Wolves are 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the NSIC, and are ranked No. 18 in the latest WBCA Division II poll. They swept on the road last weekend, beating Bemidji State, 81-72 and Minnesota Crookston, 78-65. Northern trails MSUM by one game in the NSIC North race.

Jill Conrad leads the Wolves at 14.9 points per game while Miranda Ristau is at 14.7 points and a  team-best 7.4 rebounds per game. Senior guard Paige Waytashek averages 10.3 points per game. Bethany Crosswait leads at 31 assists while Ristau leads with 17 blocks.

Northern State is scoring 66 points per game and allowing 52.3 points per game. The Wolves outrebound their foes 37.8-30.2.

Curt Fredrickson is in his 38th season as Northern's head coach with a record of 804-294 at the school.
