MSUM Women Look to Continue Winning Ways vs. Mavericks and Golden Bears

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team wraps up the 2016 calendar year with a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference home games. The Dragons host Minnesota State, Mankato at 6 p.m. on Friday and conclude the weekend with a home game against Concordia-St. Paul at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The Dragons (8-1, 6-0 NSIC) are alone in first in the NSIC by one game over Sioux Falls, Augustana and Winona State, who are all 5-1. MSUM leads the NSIC North by two games over No. 25 Northern State, a team the Dragons have beaten twice this season. MSUM is just outside the top 25 in the latest WBCA poll.

MSUM will meet Minnesota State for a 41st time with the Mavericks holding a 26-14 series lead. The Dragons will meet Concordia-St. Paul for a 37th time with the Golden Bears leading the series 20-16. The Dragons beat both teams by double digits on the road last season.

About the Dragons
The Dragons enter the week on a nine-game winning streak, which is their longest since winning 11 in a row in 2008-09. Through Dec. 29, they are alone in first in the NSIC with a 6-0 record, one game ahead of three teams.

Junior forward Drew Sannes leads MSUM at 17.0 points and 9.6 rebounds per game, while junior guard Cassidy Thorson averages 14.9 points per game. Sophomore Jacky Volkert averages 11.4 points per game and leads with 44 assists and 18 steals. She leads the NSIC in assist-to-turnover ratio.

The Dragons allow 52.4 points per game, second-best in the NSIC. Teams are shooting only 36.5 percent against the Dragons this season, including just 25.1 percent from three-point range.

MSUM outrebounds its foes 38.0-30.2.

Karla Nelson is in her 17th season as the MSUM head coach with a record of 287-178 at the school.

About Minnesota State
Minnesota State is 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the NSIC. The Mavericks enter the week on a two-game winning streak after earning double-digit wins over Concordia-St. Paul and Waldorf on Dec. 17 and 19, respectively.

Minnesota State averages 77.3 points per game and allows 68.3 per game. The Mavericks are shooting 44.2 percent from the field this season. Junior Claire Ziegler averages 13.9 points and 7.9 rebounds per game to lead the Mavericks. Brittany Scherber averages 11.6 points per game for MSU while Sammie Delzotto averages 10.3. Monica Muth leads Minnesota State at 2.7 assists per game.

Emilee Thiesse is in her fifth season as MSU's head coach with a record of 86-42 at the school.

About Concordia-St. Paul
The Golden Bears are 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the NSIC. They lost to Minnesota State, 86-68 in their last game on Dec. 17. CSP will face Northern State prior to facing MSUM.

Anna Schmitt leads Concordia at 15.2 points and 3.9 assists per game while Lauren Shifflett averages 11.1 points per contest. Mishayla Jones averages 10.4 points per game while Lindsay Dorr averages 10.0. Kyrah Fredenburg averages 10.5 rebounds per game, which is best in the NSIC.

The Golden Bears score 65.8 points per game and shoot 38.9 percent from the field. They allow 65.5 points per game and teams are shooting 39.4 percent from the field against them. Concordia is being outrebounded 38.6-37.0 this year.
