ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team outscored St. Cloud State 26-5 in the fourth quarter on its way to a 74-50 win over the Huskies Saturday afternoon in St. Cloud, Minn.
MSUM is now 18-5 overall and 15-5 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while the Huskies fell to 13-11 overall and 12-8 in the league.
The Dragons remain in a tie for first in the NSIC North Division with Northern State. The Wolves beat Minnesota Duluth 82-64 on Saturday.
Freshman guard
Jacky Volkert scored a career-high 19 points for MSUM, while junior guard
Morgan Banasik had 16. Senior forward
Savanna Handevidt had a double-double with 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Volkert and sophomore forward
Cassidy Thorson had three assists each.
The Dragons had a commanding 48-31 edge in rebounds.
Leading 50-47 early the fourth quarter, MSUM took firm control with a 13-0 run over a span of four minutes to establish a 63-47 lead. Handevidt led the run with six points while Thorson buried a key three which ignited the run.
From there, it was all MSUM as the Dragons outscored SCSU 11-3 the rest off the way to take the 24-point win.
MSUM took a 29-28 lead into halftime, thanks to nine points from Banasik and eight from Volkert. MSUM shot 43.3 percent (13-of-30) in the first half compared to 34.3 percent (12-of-35) for the Huskies.
SCSU built a 41-35 lead in the third but MSUM closed the quarter on a 13-4 run to take a 48-45 lead heading into the fourth. Volkert and sophomore forward
Drew Sannes each had four points to lead the Dragon rally.
From the 6:02 mark of the third quarter to the finish, MSUM outscored St. Cloud State 39-9, turning a six-point deficit into a 24-point win in the process.
Senior forward
Heather Strese had six points, nine rebounds and two steals for the Dragons.
MSUM returns home for its final regular-season homestand next weekend, starting Friday against Bemidji State (6 p.m.)
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: The last two times that the Dragons have played on Feb. 13 were both home games versus the University of Minnesota Duluth. The Dragons won 68-59 last year while the Bulldogs bested the Dragons 66-62 in 2010. Prior to tonight, the last time the Dragons played on this date on the road was when they won 90-71 at Bemidji St. on Feb. 13, 2009.
