Dragon Men to Face Upper Iowa in Quarterfinals of NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tourney

WHAT'S AHEAD...

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The No. 7-ranked Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team will face the Peacocks of Upper Iowa in the second round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Sanford Health men's basketball tournament on Saturday at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S. D. The game is slated to tip off at 12 p.m. 

The games will also be broadcast live online at msumdragons.com with Dragon broadcaster Steve d'Eustachio on the call.

The Dragons are the #1 seed out of the NSIC North while Upper Iowa earned the fourth seed out of the south division. The Peacocks are 16-16 overall and 11-11 in conference play. In their previous meeting this year, the Dragons defeated the Peacocks by a final score of 105-85. In overall meetings, MSUM leads UIU 11-7 and looks to continue its winning ways over UIU this weekend. 

On the year, the Peacocks are averaging 82.2 points per game while allowing 82.0. They are shooting 45 percent from the field and have 34.8 rebounds per game. The Peacocks are dishing out 12.7 assists per game and giving up 13.1 turnovers. They have 5.5 steals and 3.0 blocks per game. UIU is led by junior guard Jimmy Roth who has 12.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Senior Jernell Hughes is putting up 12.5 points and is dishing out 2.2 assists per game while sophomore guard Carson Parker has 11.2 points and leads the team in rebounds per game at 5.1. The Peacocks are coached by third year head coach Brooks McKowen. 

A LOOK BACK AT LAST WEEK...

Wednesday evening at Nemzek Fieldhouse, the Dragons hosted the Wayne State Wildcats in the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health men's basketball tournament where the Dragons would prevail in impressive fashion, 109-83. 

The Dragons broke several records in the game, including the most points scored in an NSIC tournament game at 109 and the most combined points between the two teams at 193. Sophomore guard Tanner Kretchman set the tournament record with 13 assists and as a team, the Dragons tied the record for most three-point field goals made in a tournament game with 17. 

Senior guard Tyler Vaughan tied a career-high 26 points and added eight rebounds, three assists and one block. Vaughan went 6-of-10 from three point range for an astounding 60 percent. Sophomore guard Tanner Kretchman added 19 points and also tied a career-high in assists at 13 while junior guard Ayob Ayob had 19 points and nine rebounds on the evening. Senior guard Evan Holt had 18 points and senior center Isaac Sevlie put up 16 points and five rebounds. 

The Dragons shot 65 percent from the field including 52 percent from three-point range while the Wildcats shot 42 percent from the field. MSUM grabbed 39 boards and got 20 points off the bench while WSC had 31 boards.
