MSUM Women, Vikings to Battle in NSIC Quarterfinal on Sunday

The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team continues play in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Sanford Health tournament on Sunday night against Augustana in Sioux Falls, S.D. The game begins at 8 p.m. at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.

The Dragons won the NSIC North Division title for the first time since the league went to divisions in 2012-13.

MSUM and Augustana will meet for a 23rd time with the Vikings holding a 15-7 series lead. The Vikings beat MSUM, 74-69 on Feb. 6 in Moorhead.

About MSUM
MSUM (21-5), which was ranked eighth in the region last week, beat Upper Iowa, 65-51 in the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health tournament on Wednesday. Sophomores Drew Sannes and Cassidy Thorson led the way with 13 points each, while junior Morgan Banasik and freshman Jacky Volkert each had 11.

Junior Morgan Banasik averages 14.6 points per game to lead MSUM while senior Heather Strese averages 13.0 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.  Senior Savanna Handevidt averages 10.1 points and a team-best 7.9 rebounds per game, while junior guard Natalie Van Wyhe averages 2.9 assists per game and leads with 45 steals. Sannes leads with 51 blocks.

The Dragons score 69.7 points per game and shoot 40.5 percent from the field.  They outrebound their foes 42.2-36.7 and allow 60.3 points per game on defense.

Karla Nelson is in her 16th season as MSUM head coach with a record of 278-176 at the school.

About Augustana
Augustana improved to 22-7 on the year with a 96-75 win over Minot State on Wednesday in the NSIC tournament first round. Nicole Kerkhoff was one of five Augie players in double figures with 18 points.

Kerkhoff leads Augie at 11.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Sophomore Logan O'Farrell, the NSIC Defensive Player of the Year, averages 11.5 points and 2.4 steals per game, while senior Sophie Kenney averages 10.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.  Sydney Rome is the fourth Viking in double figures at 10.1 points per game.

The Vikings average 74.8 points per game and shoot 39 percent from the field. They outrebound their foes at 42.2-41.7 and allow 65.1 points per game.

Dave Krauth is in his 27th year as the Augustana head coach with a record of 552-245 at the school.

All-NSIC Teams Announced
Junior guard Morgan Banasik and senior forward Heather Strese were each named to the All-NSIC First Team. The announcement came on Thursday.

Banasik averaged 14.4 points in 22 conference games in helping the Dragons to the NSIC North Division title. She averaged 1.6 steals and 1.9 threes per game in league play, and was second in minutes played per game 36.2.  Overall, Banasik averaged 14.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.2 assist and 1.7 steals per game for the regular season.

Strese averaged 12.7 points and 7.1 rebounds per game during the conference season. She was ninth in the league in field-goal percentage at .490 and 14th in three-point percentage (.371). Strese scored in double figures 18 times and averaged 13.0 points and 7.2 rebounds per game for the regular season. Strese is a two-time NSIC North Division Player of the Week honoree.
