MOORHEAD, Minn. – The No 8.-ranked Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team defeated the Wayne State Wildcats, 84-72 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Friday night at Nemzek Fieldhouse.

The Dragons are now 23-3 on the year and 15-2 in the conference while Wayne State is 5-18 overall and 3-14 in the NSIC.

Senior center Isaac Sevlie led all scorers with 23 points, six rebounds and five blocks while sophomore guard Tanner Kretchman added 13 points and six assists. Senior guard Tyler Vaughan had 12 points and a career-high 10 assists and junior guard Ayob Ayob added 11 points and a block. Senior guard Ngijol Songolo put up 10 points and had six boards while junior forward Aaron Lien gave the Dragons eight points and five rebounds. Â
MSUM shot 58.8 percent from the field on the game while Wayne State shot 43.3 percent. The Dragons and Wayne State each grabbed 31 boards while Dragons converted 10 second chance points. MSUM had six blocks and eight steals and received 18 points from the bench. Wayne State committed 14 turnovers and got 22 bench points.

The Dragons took an early 8-3 lead on a three from Songolo just three minutes into the game. Sevlie would hit two free-throws with 12 minutes to play in the first, giving the Dragons a 21-14 lead before a monster dunk from senior guard Evan Holt would give MSUM a seven point lead and the momentum. Sevlie would hit back-to-back buckets to end the half, giving MSUM a 45-32 lead going into the locker room at the half. Â
The Wildcats would claw their way back, but would never come within 10 points of the Dragons in the second half. A three from Ayob would propel the Dragon lead to 21 at 62-41 with 12:44 to play in the half. Sevlie would hit two more free throws with just over four minutes to play and give the Dragons a 74-62 lead. Sevlie went 9-of-11 from the free-throw line for 82 percent.  The Wildcats would hit a three with just under a minute to go, but the Dragons would hold strong and end the game 84-72.

The Dragons are back in action tomorrow at 6 p.m. for a match against No. 1-ranked Augustana. The game will be played at Nemzek Fieldhouse.
