CLAREMONT, Fla. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team pounded out five extra-base hits in a 4-1 win over Mercy on Sunday in Clermont, Fla. The win gave MSUM a split on the day as the Dragons fell to Pace University, 2-0 earlier in the day.
MSUM is now 4-6 on the season. Mercy fell to 5-7 while Pace improved to 3-2.
Junior first baseman
Lauren Meeker was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two doubles to pace the offense. Senior left fielder
Kristy Bruni was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while sophomore shortstop
Sydney Beck was 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Senior pitcher
Kristen Nordby had a triple while junior second baseman
Jill Fox had a double. Freshman third baseman
Morgan Anderson and junior designated hitter
Kristina Villalobos had hits for MSUM, which finished with nine for the game.
For the second straight day, Nordby had a strong showing on the mound for MSUM. She went the distance and allowed one unearned run. She struck out six, walked three and gave up six hits.
The Dragons got on the board in the second. Meeker doubled with one out and moved to third on an error. One out later, junior right fielder
Hannah Klug reached on an error, scoring Meeker with the game's first run.
In the third, Fox led off with a double, and one out later, moved to third on a single by Bruni. After a strikeout, Meeker delivered a key two-out, two-run double to score Fox and Bruni and put MSUM in front 3-0.
The lead grew to 4-0 in the sixth. Anderson led off with a single and scored on Beck's triple. Mercy scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 4-1, and loaded the bases with two out in the seventh, but Nordby struck out Julie Gross to end the game.
In the opening loss to Pace, MSUM was held to one hit, a double by Anderson. Meeker and sophomore shortstop
Sydney Beck reached by walks.
Senior pitcher
Morgan Nybo threw well in defeat. She allowed two earned runs and six hits in six innings, striking out three while walking none.
The Dragons trailed 2-0 in the seventh but brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the top of the frame. Meeker walked, and freshman
Aunica Novacek pinch-ran for her. One out later, Beck walked to put runners on first and second with one out. However, Pace starter Kaitlynn Nelson struck out the final two Dragons to end the threat.
MSUM returns to action on Monday in Clermont against Franklin Pierce and Wayne State (Mich.). Games are at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively in Clermont.
