CLERMONT, Fla. – Senior Kristy Bruni had a big day to help the Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team to a pair of nonconference wins in Orlando, Fla. The Dragons opened with a 7-4 win over Franklin Pierce and then completed their trip with a 10-4 rout of St. Michael's College.

MSUM (7-9) went 5-5 on the spring break trip, ending with a three-game winning streak.

"It was two great team wins," MSUM head coach Kelsey Fehl said.

Bruni had a huge day for MSUM. She hit .857 (6-of-7) with two homers and five RBI. She had a 1.714 slugging percentage.

"Kristy Bruni had a great day at the plate,"  Fehl said.

In the win over Franklin Pierce, Bruni was 3-for-3 with two homers and three RBI. Junior center fielder Carly Williamson was 2-for-4 while junior designated hitter Kristina Villalobos was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Freshman right fielder Aunica Novacek was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while freshman third baseman Morgan Anderson had an RBI. Senior second baseman Kristen Nordby added a hit for MSUM.

"We were able to string together our hits and score some runs," Fehl said.

Senior pitcher Morgan Nybo picked up her third win of the year for the Dragons. She allowed 11 hits and four earned runs in seven innings, striking out seven.

Franklin Pierce scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead.  The Dragons answered quickly in the bottom of the first. Williamson singled, and two outs later, Bruni crushed a two-run homer to center field to give MSUM a 2-1 lead.

The Ravens came back to tie the game at 2-2 in the second. The Dragons regained the lead in the bottom of the frame as Anderson led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. She moved to second on a groundout and scored on an RBI double by Novacek to make it 3-2.

A two-run third inning helped Franklin Pierce take the lead at 4-3. The Dragons responded again in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Nordby singled, and Bruni followed with a single. Villalobos delivered the clutch hit with a two-run double to score both runners, making it 5-4. Moments later, Villalobos scored on a fielder's choice by Anderson to push the lead to 6-4.

Bruni homered to center to lead off the fifth to add an insurance run for MSUM. It was her second of the game.

Two Dragons had three hits against St. Michael's: Bruni (3-for-4, two RBI) and Williamson (3-for-5, one RBI). Freshman shortstop Taylor Roddie was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI while Nordby was 2-for-5 with an RBI while Novacek was 2-for-4. Junior first baseman Lauren Meeker was 1-for-4 with an RBI while Anderson and freshman catcher Savanah Tweet had hits.

MSUM set season-highs for runs (10) and hits (15) in the win.

"The second game, it was more of the same offensively, and we were able to continue to produce at the plate and drive runs in," Fehl said.

Redshirt freshman Gabby Williams picked up the first win of her Dragon career on the mound. She allowed eight hits and four earned runs in seven innings, striking out one while walking one.

The Dragons struck right away in the first. Williamson singled, and scored on an RBI double by Nordby to make it 1-0. Bruni singled to score Nordby, and Meeker followed with an RBI single to drive in Bruni with MSUM's third run.

St. Michael's scored in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 3-1. The Dragons put up four runs in the second. Tweet was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a groundout. Williamson singled, and Roddie then stepped up with a two-run double to score both runs, giving MSUM a 5-1 advantage. Nordby singled, and Bruni followed with a single to score Roddie as MSUM built a 6-1 lead. Nordby would later score on a passed ball.

St. Michael's scored three times in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 7-4 but would not score again. The Dragons, meanwhile, pushed the lead to 9-4 in the third. With one out, Tweet singled, and moved to second on a single by Novacek. After a fielder's choice forced out Tweet at third, Roddie singled to score Novacek. Williamson scored on an error to make it 9-4.

The Dragons added an insurance run in the seventh. Anderson doubled to lead off the inning and two outs later, scored on an RBI single by Williamson to make it 10-4.

Williams did not allow a run after the second and allowed just three hits over the final five innings.

MSUM is scheduled to open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Tuesday at home against Northern State. The doubleheader begins at 2 p.m.
