MOORHEAD, Minn. – Freshman shortstop
Taylor Roddie delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team a thrilling 2-1 win over Northern State in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Thursday in Moorhead, Minn. The win gave MSUM a split on the day as Northern State prevailed 6-1 in the first game.
Kristen Nordby
allowed one earned run
in 10 innings in Game 2
to pick up the win.
MSUM is now 13-23 overall and 6-14 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while Northern State is 19-25 and 9-11 in the NSIC.
In the second game, senior pitcher
Kristen Nordby had a stellar outing to pick up her seventh win of the season. She went 10 innings and allowed one earned run, striking out eight while walking two. The Dragons were also solid defensively, not committing an error while turning a double play. Freshman catcher
Savanah Tweet threw out two runners trying to steal.
"We made some good adjustments defensively from the first game to the second game, and we made all the plays," Fehl said. "Kristin Nordby pitched a great game for us."
Junior center fielder
Carly Williamson was 2-for-5 with a double. Roddie was 1-for-5 with an RBI while junior first baseman
Lauren Meeker was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Junior second baseman
Jill Fox and freshman third baseman
Morgan Anderson were each 1-for-4 with a run scored. Senior left fielder
Kristy Bruni and junior designated hitter
Kristina Villalobos each had hits for MSUM.
Northern State scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead, but would not score again against Nordby.
The game stayed 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh when the Dragons rallied to tie. With one out, Fox singled, and would score on a double by Meeker to tie the game at 1-1 to send the game to extra innings.
The 1-1 tie continued until the 10th. Anderson led off with a single. Junior right fielder
Hannah Klug put down a bunt; the Wolves tried to force out Anderson at second, but she was safe. Williamson then reached on an infield single to load the bases with nobody out.
Roddie, after fouling off several pitches, hit a single through the left side to score Anderson, giving the Dragons a 2-1 win.
"We really found a way to manufacture a run in the 10th with timely hitting and bunting," Fehl said. "We got key hits from
Jill Fox and
Lauren Meeker in the seventh inning to tie it up. We kept battling and were able to come up with the clutch hits offensively we needed it."
In the opening game, freshman right fielder
Aunica Novacek was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while senior pitcher
Morgan Nybo was 1-for-1. Bruni and Villalobos had hits for MSUM.
Nybo took the loss, going five innings. She allowed seven hits and five runs, only three of which were earned. She struck out six and walked two. Redshirt freshman
Gabby Williams pitched two innings of relief and allowed one unearned run.
The Wolves scored in the top of the second against Nybo to take a 1-0 lead. The Dragons tied the game in the bottom of the second. Meeker walked, and freshman
KyLee Bartholomay pinch-ran for her. Bartholomay stole second, and moved to third on a base hit by Nybo. Novacek put down a well-placed bunt that went for a single, allowing Bartholomay to score the tying run.
The game stayed a 1-1 pitching duel between Nybo and Northern's Jamie Fisher until the top of the sixth. The Wolves broke the game open with four runs in the sixth, using four hits while taking advantage of two Dragon errors. Northern added another unearned run in the seventh to make it 6-1.
MSUM goes on the road this weekend for a pair of doubleheaders, starting on Saturday at Winona State.
