MSUM ended the season at 16-30 overall and 9-21 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The nine wins (which MSUM also reached in 2014) are tied for the most for the Dragons since 2007, when they won 11 NSIC contests.
Saturday was the final doubleheader for
Kristy Bruni,
Kristen Nordby and
Morgan Nybo, the three seniors on the roster.
"Our three seniors made big impacts on our program the past four years," MSUM head coach
Kelsey Fehl said. "We had hoped to send them out with a couple of wins but we came up short. We will miss their contributions to our program."
In the first game, senior second baseman
Kristen Nordby was 2-for-3 with an RBI while freshman catcher
Savanah Tweet was 1-for-2. Junior center fielder
Carly Williamson was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Senior pitcher
Morgan Nybo took the loss, going seven innings. She allowed three runs (two earned), striking out five while walking three.
MSUM took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Williamson reached on an infield single, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop
Taylor Roddie. Nordby singled to right field to score Williamson, giving the Dragons an early 1-0 advantage.
Bemidji State scored an unearned run in the second to tie the game at 1-1. In the fifth, a two-run homer by Jessica Yost proved to be the game-winner as the Beavers took a 3-1 lead, and neither team scored the rest of the way.
In the second game, Nordby threw well, giving up two runs (one earned) in seven innings. She struck out four and walked two in her final start on the mound as a Dragon.
MSUM's offense was held in check for much of the game, managing just two hits. Tweet and Roddie had the two Dragon hits, both singles.
Bemidji scored one run in the third to take a 1-0 lead, and added an insurance run in the seventh to make it 2-0.
"We weren't able to string enough hits together offensively in either game to produce some runs," Fehl said. "Our pitchers kept us in both games, but we couldn't get that big hit or rally to get the runs across."
The Dragons graduate the three seniors but will return a solid nucleus for next season.
