Sioux Falls, S.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Volleyball team dropped a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match to Sioux Falls (9-5, 3-3 NSIC) on Friday night. The Cougars won 25-13, 25-18, 25-19.
MSUM is now 6-8 overall and 1-5 in NSIC play.
The Dragons put down 29 kills on the evening hitting .135 as a team. Junior captain hitter Carly Masloski had a team-high eight kills, followed by senior hitter Tyann Caspers who had eight kills with a .438 hitting percentage.
Redshirt-freshman hitter Sarah Hagler was once again the leader in blocks putting back three. Hagler also had six kills and a .417 hitting percentage. Redshirt-freshman setter Makayla Wenzel assisted on 27 kills and had four digs. Sophomore libero Monica Vega had a team-high 16 digs.
In the first set, kills from freshman middle blocker Mikayla Larson and Caspers had the Dragons down 4-5 early on. The Cougars went on an 8-1 run building a 12-5 lead. MSUM battled back down just three points at 14-11, but two more large runs from Sioux Falls put the set away at 25-13.
MSUM were the first to draw blood in the second set thanks to a kill from Hagler that was set up by Wenzel. The Dragons put a few more kills down to build an early 7-3 lead. Freshman hitter Courtney Selbitschka and junior middle blocker Taylor Liesemeyer each had kills during that run. Sioux Falls cut the lead to 14-11, before going on an eight point run building a lead, 19-14. The cougars eventually ended the set 25-18.
In the third set, Sioux Falls jumped out to an early 5-1 lead. A Caspers kill, and a Wenzel, Liesemeyer block, and a Masloski Kill knotted the set up at seven apiece. The Dragons battled back-and-forth trying to gain an edge. A kills by Masloski assisted by Wenzel saw MSUM down just 17-19. Sioux Falls went on an 8-2 run to end the set 25-19.
The Dragons travel to No. 4 Southwest Minnesota State (11-3, 5-1 NSIC) on Saturday, Oct. 1. The match is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
