MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team pushed University of Sioux Falls to four sets but came up short, falling 3-1 (25-11, 20-25, 25-19, 25-23)
MSUM is now 7-10 overall and 2-7 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, while USF improves to 10-4, 5-4 NSIC.
Lauren Kiewiet led the Dragons in kills with nine, and also had 12 set assists.
Kaylyn Jenkins had seven kills on the night, as well as two service aces and four blocks.
Sarah Petrbok added five kills, four service aces and 12 digs. Freshman setter
Ellie Hoyt made 21 set assists.
Monica Vega led the back row defense with 19 digs.
In the first set, the Dragons were only trailing 11-9, however the Cougars made 12 consecutive points, which led them to a 25-11 set win. MSUM regained momentum in the second set starting out with a 4-0 lead. They carried the lead throughout the whole set having a four point or greater lead over the Cougars. Two attacking errors by USF were the final points of the set and MSUM won 25-20, tying the match 1-1.
Sioux Falls started out the third set with at 16-7 lead, but MSUM fought back with six back to back points, including three service aces by Petrbok, making the score 16-14. Despite the Dragons efforts, USF took the third set, 25-19. Set four was back-and-forth until the teams were tied at 23. Kills by Abby Feyereisen and Bria Barfnecht gave the Cougers a 25-23 set win, taking the match 3-1.
Up next, MSUM will travel to Augustana University Oct. 13 and Wayne State University Oct. 14.
