LANCASTER, Texas – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team dropped a 93-80 nonconference game to Henderson State (Ark.) in action Friday in Lancaster, Texas.
MSUM is 0-1 on the year while Henderson State is 1-0.
Senior guard Tanner Kretchman finished with 22 points and two assists and is now two assists from tying the all-time school record (471) held by current Dragon assistant coach
Jordan Riewer.
Junior guard Travaun Coad had 14 points while sophomore forward Matt Anderson had 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Evan Hines had 11 points and seven rebounds.
MSUM struggled from the three-point line, hitting just 3-of-19 (15.8 percent) attempts. The Dragons shot well overall from the field, shooting 51.7 percent (31-of-60) while the Reddies shot 50.7 percent (37-of-73).
MSUM trailed 12-7 within the first five minutes but went on a 12-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 19-12 lead. Anderson led the way with four points during that run while Kretchman buried a three.
Henderson State came back to take the lead and led 37-30 with 1:29 left in the first half. The Dragons closed the half on a 7-0 run, with Kretchman supplying five points, to tie the game at 37-37 going into the break. Kretchman had 13 points in the first half.
The game stayed close through the first nine minutes of the second half as Henderson State held a 58-56 lead with 11:49 left. Over the next seven minutes, the Reddies outscored the Dragons 20-9 to build a 78-65 lead with 4:10 left in the game in what proved to be the decisive stretch.
Sophomore guard Johnny Beeninga added eight points off the bench for MSUM.
The Dragons will face Southern Arkansas at noon on Saturday in Lancaster, Texas, to wrap up the trip.
