MOORHEAD, Minn. — Despite a career-high 20 points from sophomore forward
Megan Hintz, the No. 19 ranked Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team came up short against No. 21 Michigan Tech on Thursday, dropping a 66-53 decision to the Wildcats at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.
MSUM fell to 0-1 on the year while Michigan Tech improved to 3-0.
Hintz finished 5-of-11 from the field and 10-of-12 from the foul line on her way to scoring 20 points. She added five rebounds. Junior guard
Jacky Volkert had 14 points and three assists while senior forward
Drew Sannes had six points and 11 rebounds. Freshman guard
Lauren Fech had four assists.
The Dragons shot 32.1 percent (17-of-53) from the field, compared to 48.3 percent (29-of-60) for the Huskies. MSUM had a 37-34 edge in rebounds.
MSUM led 25-21 with 4:43 left in the first half after two free throws from Hintz. The Huskies went on a 12-2 run to close the half and take a 33-27 lead into halftime.
Hintz had eight points while Volkert and freshman
Brooklyn Liegel had six points each in the opening 20 minutes.
Michigan Tech took a 53-41 lead into the fourth quarter. The Dragons cut the lead to 55-48 with 6:16 left in the game after Sannes hit a three and Hintz hit two free throws. But MSUM got no closer the rest of the night.
MSUM hosts Northern Michigan in a nonconference game at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
