William Jewell Rallies in 2nd Half to Down Dragon Men, 89-75; Kretchman Named All-Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team led 46-39 at halftime but William Jewell rallied in the second half in an 89-75 win over the Dragons in nonconference action Saturday at the Drury Thanksgiving Classic in Springfield, Mo.

MSUM is now 2-4 on the season while William Jewell improved to 7-0.

Senior guard Tanner Kretchman was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 17.5 points per game in the two games for the Dragons.

Kretchman and junior guard Travaun Code led MSUM with 21 points each. Coad's 21 were an MSUM career-high. Sophomore forward Matt Anderson had 13 points while sophomore guard Evan Hines had 10 rebounds.

The Dragons shot 40.6 percent (28-of-69) for the game compared to 46 percent (30-of-64) for Cardinals. WJC had a 40-37 edge in rebounds.

The game was tied at 32-32 with 6:39 left in the first half before MSUM went on a 14-1 run to take a 46-33 lead with 3:06 left in the half. Kretchman sparked the run with seven points while Anderson had five. MSUM led 46-39 at halftime, with Coad providing 14 points, Kretchman 12 and Anderson 10.

The Dragons held a 53-50 lead with 16:08 left in the game after Kretchman hit a three-pointer, but a 26-7 run over the next 10 minutes pushed the Cardinals into the lead at 76-60, and MSUM didn't get closer than 14 the rest of the way.

Coad and sophomore guard Johnny Beeninga had three assists each for MSUM. Beeninga had seven points and four rebounds as well.

MSUM opens Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Dec. 1 at the University of Mary. Game time is 8 p.m. in Bismarck, N.D.
