MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Mark Reed was the last Minnesota State University Moorhead football player to be drafted into the NFL, in 1981. He was inducted into the MSUM Dragon Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.
Reed is part of an exclusive club – he is one of six players to appear in just one NFL game.
The New York Times ran an article on the six players, comparing them to the movie character Archie "Moonlight" Graham of the film Field of Dreams.
The Moorhead native was a three-year starter at quarterback for the Dragons and an AP All-American honorable mention selection. He was a two-time first-team all-conference selection as well.
Reed was an eighth-round pick by the New York Giants in 1981. That Giants coaching staff included assistants who later became two future Super Bowl-winning head coaches – Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick.
After being drafted by the Giants, Reed was traded to the Baltimore Colts – who later relocated in Indianapolis. His lone appearance in an NFL game was on Oct. 16, 1983. He was 6-of-10 passing for 34 yards in an appearance in the fourth quarter of a game against Buffalo.
That would be the one and only appearance in an NFL game for Reed, who now lives in Eagan, Minn. He has had a successful career for 3M.
