Dragon Women Fall to Division I Opponent Iowa, 85-56 in Exhibition

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team fell to Big Ten foe Iowa, 85-56 in an exhibition game Sunday night in Iowa City, Iowa.

The game was the second straight exhibition on the road against a Division I foe for MSUM. The Hawkeyes finished 20-14 a year ago.

Senior guard Cassidy Thorson and junior guard Jacky Volkert paced MSUM with nine points each. Sophomore guard Kourtney Selensky had seven while freshman Brooklyn Liegel had six.

Sophomore forward Madi Green had seven rebounds while Volkert, sophomore forward Megan Hintz and freshman guard Lauren Fech had two assists each.
MSUM shot 26.8 percent (18-of-68) for the game and finished with 39 rebounds. Iowa shot 50 percent (36-of-72) and had 48 rebounds.

The Dragons were tied at 4-4 after a layup by junior guard Jacky Volkert but the Hawkeyes went on a 12-0 run to build a 16-4 advantage.

Iowa took a 44-20 lead into halftime, thanks to a 9-0 run over the final 2:45 of the half. MSUM shot just 22.2 percent (8-of-36) in the first half while the Hawkeyes shot 51.4 percent (19-of-37). Thorson had six points in the first half to lead the Dragons.

The Dragons cut the gap in the third quarter, outscoring the Hawkeyes 28-19 in that frame to cut the lead to 63-48. Nine different Dragons scored in the third, led by Volkert and Selensky with four points apiece.

Two free throws by senior forward Shannon Galegher brought MSUM within 65-52 with 7:49 left,  but the Hawkeyes outscored the Dragons 20-4 to close the game on their way to the 85-56 win.

MSUM opens the regular season at home on Thursday, Nov. 16 vs. Michigan Tech. Tipoff is 7 p.m. at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead.
