ABERDEEN, S.D. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team led by six at halftime but No. 12-ranked Northern State came back in the second half to earn a 69-65 win over the Dragons in action Friday night in Aberdeen, S.D. Senior forward
Drew Sannes surpassed 1,000 points for her Dragon career in the win.
MSUM fell to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the NSIC with the loss while Northern State improved to 9-1 overall and 5-0 in the league.
Sannes became the 22nd Dragon women's player to surpass 1,000 points with her basket midway through the third quarter. She entered the game needing three to reach 1,000 and finished with six points on the night after being in foul trouble in the first half.
Freshman guard
Kiley Borowicz had 15 points and a career-high five steals off the bench for MSUM while freshman guard
Brooklyn Liegel and junior guard
Jacky Volkert had 10 each. Sophomore forward
Madi Green had a career high nine points off the bench. Sannes had seven rebounds and Volkert led with five assists.
The game was close the whole way with the biggest lead for either team being eight points. The score was tied 12 times and the lead changed hands 10 times.
A three-pointer by senior guard
Cassidy Thorson gave MSUM a 57-56 lead with 5:27 left in the game. The game was tied at 58-58 and 60-60 over the next few minutes; MSUM was within 63-62 with 2:49 left after a Borowicz bucket but the Dragons were never able to regain the lead. They were within 68-65 after a three by Volkert but a free throw by Miranda Ristau with four seconds left iced the game for MSUM.
It was a big second quarter that vaulted MSUM into the lead, as the Dragons outscored the Wolves 25-18 to take a 40-34 lead. MSUM hit 7-of-13 threes in the opening 20 minutes. Northern State cut the lead down to two after three quarters and from there the biggest lead for either team was six points.
MSUM hosts Northern State in a rematch on Tuesday at 6 p.m. to wrap up the pre-Christmas portion of its schedule.
