ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team fell to Concordia University, St. Paul, 72-62, Sunday in the Dragons final game of the 2017 calendar year. Four Dragons scored in double figures for MSUM.
MSUM fell to 4-10 overall and 2-6 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action, while CSP improved to 2-11, 1-6 NSIC.
Junior guard Tavaun Coad scored a team-high of 16 points and added seven rebounds. Addison Park added 13 points to the Dragons efforts, while Tanner Kretchman and Johnny Beeninga scored ten points, each. Kretchman tallied five assists on the night, while Beeninga had two assists and Coad had one. Sophomore forward Matt Anderson led the Dragons in rebounds with nine.
MSUM shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55) compared to the Golden Bears at 48.4 percent (31-of-64). CSP outrebounded the Dragons 38-34.
The game started out back-and-forth as MSUM would score and CSP would come back to tie. The Dragons led the game, 16-14, at the 12:22 mark of the first half, a span that MSUM saw as much as a three point lead, three times. However, the Golden Bears would go on a 13-4 run to take a seven-point lead over the Dragons. MSUM was able to come back to tie the game at 31-31 thanks to a layup by Joe Sevlie with just over three minutes left in the half. A dunk by the Cody Carlson of CSP gave the Golden Bears a 33-31 lead going into halftime.
Juniors Coad and Park each had eight first half points for MSUM.
The teams opened up the second half nearly the same as the first, back-and-forth as the score was tied on five different occasions within the first eight minutes of play. Despite a one point lead for the Dragons at the 14:49 mark of the second half, the Golden Bears led for the remainder of the game, leading them to a 72-62 New Year's Eve victory over MSUM
The Dragons will return to home to take on Minot State and U-Mary next weekend to begin a four-game homestand.
