NSIC Showdown with Winona State Opens Homestand for No. 17 Dragon Women

MOORHEAD, Minn. — It will be a battle of the top two teams in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference standings on Friday when No. 17 Minnesota State University Moorhead hosts No. 20 Winona State in a pivotal conference matchup at Nemzek Fieldhouse. Tip-off at 6 p.m.

The MSUM-Winona State matchup begins a four-game homestand for the Dragons, who will also host Upper Iowa at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The Dragons (17-3, 14-2 NSIC) lead the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference by one game over Winona State heading into this week's action, and are in command of the NSIC North with a three-game lead over Northern State.

MSUM will face Winona State for a 75th time and leads the all-time series 45-29. The Dragons have never lost to Upper Iowa and hold a 19-0 series lead over the Peacocks.

About the Dragons
The Dragons, ranked No. 16 in the latest WBCA poll, enter the week at 17-3 overall and 14-2 in the NSIC. They lead the conference by one game over Friday's opponent, Winona State with six games remaining. MSUM split on the road last weekend, beating SMSU 73-66 before losing to USF 66-61.

Junior forward Drew Sannes leads MSUM at 15.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, while junior guard Cassidy Thorson averages 15.0 points per game. Sophomore  Jacky Volkert averages 11.7 points per game and leads with 89 assists and 22 steals. Senior guard Natalie Van Wyhe leads with 27 steals.

The Dragons allow 57.0 points per game, second-best in the NSIC. Teams are shooting only 38.2 percent against the Dragons this season. MSUM outrebounds its foes 36.8-31.5 and scores 70.4 points per game.

Karla Nelson is in her 17th season as the MSUM head coach with a record of 295-180 at the school.

About Winona State
Winona State is 18-4 overall and 13-3 in the NSIC. The Warriors enter the week one game behind MSUM for first place in the conference and have won five of their last six games. They swept at home last weekend, beating Minot State, 69-53 and Mary, 65-47.

Tara Roelofs leads WSU at 13.7 points per game while Jenny Tuttle is at 12.4 points per game and Kayla Timmerman is at 11.0 points per game. Hannah McGlone is at 9.4 points and a team-best 7.8 rebounds per game. Tuttle leads with 73 assists while Roelofs has 29 steals.

The Warriors score 67.9 points per game and shoot an NSIC-best 46.1 percent from the field.  The Warriors outrebound their foes 38.9-32.6 and allow 57.2 points per game.

Scott Ballard is in his 13th season as the Winona State with a record of 228-121 at the school.

About Upper Iowa
Upper Iowa, which faces Northern State on Friday prior to facing MSUM, is 3-16 overall and 3-13 in the NSIC under Head Coach Micha Thompson.  The Peacocks ended a five-game losing streak with a 65-53 victory over Minot State on Saturday.

Blair Klostermann leads Upper Iowa at 18.4 points per game, while Carly Pagel is at 10.7 points per game. Haley Martin averages 5.8 rebounds a game while Sam Ofstad leads with 71 assists. Ashley Ray has 22 steals.

Upper Iowa averages 59.5 points per game and shoots 37.8 percent from the field. The Peacocks allow 70.4 points per game and are being outrebounded 37.4-36.9.

Micha Thompson is in her first season as the Upper Iowa head coach.
