No. 21 Dragon Men Push Win Streak to Seven Games, Down Minnesota Duluth in Regular Season Finale, 62-56.

DULUTH, Minn. –
No. 21 Minnesota State University Moorhead ended the regular season on a seven-game win streak as they defeated Minnesota Duluth (4-24, 3-19 NSIC), 62-56. MSUM improved to 24-4 overall and 19-3 in the NSIC.

The Dragons now will turn their attention to the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament as the Dragons will host Concordia-St. Paul at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. The tournament bracket is above.
 
How it happened…
A slow start for the Dragons turned around after back-to-back three's from junior guard Tanner Kretchman and senior forward Ayob Ayob. MSUM led over Minnesota Duluth, 10-4  with 14:41 left in the first half.
 
The Bulldogs tied the game at 18 apiece, but four straight points from Ayob put the Dragons back up 22-18. Minnesota Duluth ended the half on a 5-0 run, and entered halftime leading MSUM 32-29.
 
The Dragons shot 32.2 percent (10-of-31) in the first half, including 30 percent (6-of-20) from beyond the arc.
 
Senior guard Aaron Lien got the scoring started in the second half, hitting a three-point shot tying the game up, 32-32. A nice move from freshman guard Johnny Beeninga resulted in a layup, and a Dragon 9-0 run, putting MSUM up 42-37.
 
The Dragons run continued, as they built their largest lead of the game, 46-37. The Bulldogs cut the Dragons lead thanks to a 6-0 run.
 
It was a half of runs, as MSUM used a 5-0 run of its own going ahead 53-46 with 4:14 left in the game. UMD pulled the game within four, as they hit a three with 50.0 seconds left in the game.
 
Beeninga and Kretchman each hit a pair of free throws in the final minute, securing a 62-56 win.
 
Impact Performances…
Junior guard Tanner Kretchman finished the game with 17 points and four assists. He was a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line.
 
Senior guard Aaron Lien finished with 13 points with six rebounds. Senior forward Ayob Ayob finished with 12 points in just 26 minutes of play.
 
Freshman guard Johnny Beeninga was 3-of-6 from the field. Beeninga finished with nine points, two rebounds and two assists.

The Dragons shot 36 percent tonight. The last time the Dragons shot under 40 percent and won was when they beat the University of Minnesota Duluth, 75-71 in Duluth on Feb. 12, 2016.
 
Up Next…
MSUM will open the NSIC tournament in Moorhead, Minn. on Wednesday, Feb. 22 against Concordia-St. Paul at 8 p.m.
