NSIC Tournament Bracket
DULUTH, Minn. – Four players scored in double figures as the No. 12 Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team earned a 75-58 win over Minnesota Duluth in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday in Duluth, Minn.
MSUM finished the regular season 23-3 overall and 20-2 in the NSIC while UMD dropped to 13-13 overall and 11-11 in the league.
The Dragons are the top seed from the NSIC North and will host Southwest Minnesota State at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the opening round of the NSIC/Sanford Health tournament at Nemzek Fieldhouse. A tournament bracket can be found above.
The Dragons shot 48.3 percent (28-of-58) compared to 40 percent (24-of-60) for UMD. The Dragons had a 37-32 edge in rebounds.
How It Happened
After leading by one at halftime, MSUM pulled away in the third quarter. The Dragons outscored UMD 25-13 in the third to take a 56-43 lead.
Junior guard
Cassidy Thorson and freshman forward
Megan Hintz sparked the offense in the third. Thorson had nine points while Hintz had six. The Dragons hit 9-of-16 field goals in the third compared to 5-of-16 for the Bulldogs.
A Thorson basket with 5:13 left gave MSUM its largest lead of the night, 68-50 and from there the Dragons cruised to their 22nd win of the season.
Impact Performances
Thorson paced the offense with 24 points. She was 9-of-17 from the field, including 5-of-11 from three-point range. She also had seven rebounds.
Hintz had 14 points in 15 minutes off the bench.
Junior forward
Drew Sannes had 13 points and six rebounds while freshman forward
Morgan Ham had 11 points and three rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Jacky Volkert had five points, five assists and five rebounds while senior guard
Natalie Van Wyhe had four points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game
The Dragon women tied the 1977-1978 and the 1991-1992 teams for the second most wins in a season in program history with 23. The 2004-2005 team that went 24-7 still is the benchmark.
