No. 11 MSUM Women to Battle Cougars in NSIC/Sanford Health Quarters

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The No. 11-ranked Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team continues Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Sanford Health tournament play on Saturday when the Dragons face the University of Sioux Falls at noon at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.

MSUM is the top seed from the NSIC North while USF is the fourth seed from the south. The Dragons were ranked fourth in the latest regional poll released Wednesday.

MSUM and USF will meet for a seventh time with the Dragons leading the series 4-2. The Cougars edged the Dragons, 66-61 earlier this season in Sioux Falls.

About the Dragons
The Dragons, ranked No. 11 in the latest WBCA poll, enter the game at 24-3 overall after dominating Southwest Minnesota State, 71-35 in the first round on Wednesday. Drew Sannes had 21 points to lead MSUM.

Sannes leads MSUM at 15.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game, while junior guard Cassidy Thorson averages 14.7 points per game. Sophomore guard Jacky Volkert averages 12.5 points per game and leads with 137 assists. Senior guard Natalie Van Wyhe leads the NSIC in assist to turnover ratio and has a team-best 36 steals.

The Dragons allow 57.6 points per game, second-best in the NSIC. Teams are shooting only 37.5 percent against the Dragons this season. MSUM outrebounds its foes 38.2-32.0 and scores 71.4 points per game.

Karla Nelson is in her 17th season as the MSUM head coach with a record of 302-180 at the school.

About USF
USF is 20-7 overall after beating St. Cloud State, 65-51 in the opening round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament on Wednesday. Madi Robson and Andi Mataloni had 15 points each to lead the Cougars.

Sam Knecht leads USF at 13.4 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. Robson averages 10.3 and leads with 169 assists. Brooke Smith averages 9.1 points per game for the Cougars. Knecht leads with 56 blocks while Smith has 57 steals.

The Cougars score 66.1 points per game and shoot 39.8 percent from the field. They allow 57.7 points per game and are being outrebounded 38.8-37.9.

Travis Traphagen is in his eighth season as USF's head coach with a record of 149-83 at the school.
